I just bought a new box for compositing and rendering, its a dual AMD Athlon MP - Its beautiful but its bloody loud.

I have two CPU Fans (AMD bundled fans), a powersupply fan, a second case fan and a fan on my GefOrce 2 Ti.

Thats 5 fans and my machine sounds like a jet engine.

Does anyone have any ideas to quiet down the fans - or are there better/quieter fans I can buy? I think half the noise comes from all of that hot air coming out the back of the machine.

Thanks,

Laurence

If you want quiet, you might try gettings some Panaflo fans. They make two models: ones that move a lot of air with a decent amount of noise, and another that moves a decent amount of air with very little noise. Anyway, if getting quieter fans doesn't help, then you can always buy some Dynamat or something that dampens the sound. I'm sure some other members here would be happy to provide you with links to places where you can get it.

You probably have some Delta's in there...they are great fans and they move a ton of air...but they sound like a Jetliner is landing overhead...LOL...
I agree...go and get some Panaflos...much quieter!

Panaflo from bgmicro $3.19

My case was hovering above the ground until I changed them(case fans) to panaflos

The Panaflo fans sold by BG Micro FBA08a12L are only moderately quiet, unless it is slowed down by voltage reduction or a speed controller such as the Fan Mate 1 from Zalman.
The least expensive way to deal with CPU fan noise are: reduce the fan rpm, replace the CPU fan with a more quiet one, or replace the whole HSF. Generally speaking, HSF with a larger fan (80m) and a large HS will give you a quieter solution.
Try to slow down the case fans by using controllers such as the Fan Mate 1. If you really want to have a quiet PC, use Papst 8412NGL (12 dBA ) for case and PSU cooling.
If your PC can get by with say 300W PSU, a Q Technology or Zalman PSU will do the trick for you.
It is better to eliminate noise than cover up noise. There is nothing to prevent you from having a comfortably PC based on your description if you just focus on the fans. Good luck.

Thanks for all the assistance! I just have a couple more questions... Will replaceing the powersupply fan void its warranty? Is replacing the CPU fan very tricky... i've replaced older fans on cpus no problem, my dual AMD's look far more complicated.

Thanks again,

Laurence

Replacing the fan in a PSU is easy. Just don't touch the capacitors inside as they can hold quite a charge even when unplugged. And yes it does void the warranty, cause you have to break the little paper seal to open it. I have done it, it's easy, just be careful. You don't need surgeons hands to do it. There is a tutorial at ocmodshop.com but his site is experiencing some down time while he is changing providers. Just unscrew the old one, screw in the new one and connect the wires. You can splice right into the old connection.
