Hey guys I got the 9th pick in my draft tomorrow in round 1...who would you take? I'm thinking these guys would be available

Nomar (but I'm scared because of the injury)
Jeter (might be a little high)
Piazza (misses too many games)
Bagwell (take a 1b this high?)
Delgado
Mussina, maybe maddux

what do you think?

There's a chance Brown might slip to 9th, if he does I'd snatch him.

But from your list I would take Piazza.

Well, you know, a good offense starts with good pitching. Jose Mesa might still be around by the 9th pick.

Scrapster, what are you talking about, he's definitely a top-3. I would recommend either Albert Belle or Mo Vaughn.

Belle isn't retiring. He won't get paid if he does so I think the Orioles will either release him or have him on the DL forever.

Get Delgado. He put up great numbers last year.

it depends, does your league put more emphasis (points) on pitching or hitting? also, how many teams are there?

I'd also look at the trends from the first 8 picks...if 3 or more take pitchers, i would too.

RangerX, IMHO I do not like to take a 1B in the first 2 rounds because that position (along with OF) is pretty deep, while OTOH Catcher (along with SS) is pretty shallow. I'm going on the assumption that Pudge will already be gone so Piazza would be a good choice.

somethingwitty, If 3 or more take pitchers, that would mean (I hope ) that Pedro, Unit and Brown are taken. Maddux is surely the next best, but I don't feel he's a first rounder.

I would put mussina above maddux-especially now that he's actually going to get some run support.

That is true, but like you said previously it really depends on the league.

prodigy, I hear ya. Well, Maddux has been consistent for the past several years so he might be a safe bet but then again, Mussina will probably end up with better-than-last-year stats by the end of this season.

yep, which is why this is still speculation...if wins count more, i'd probably go mussina, ip go to maddux (Yankees have a great closer-they'd use him), era could go either way this year, etc. and we still dont even know if pitching means anything important in the league

<edit> mussina will definitly have better stats this year than last-look at W/L last year, and then consider his complete lack of run support with the O's </edit>

i'm in the league, luchini is in. piazza doesn't play as many games. I have the 8th pick actually and I think I'm gonna delgado or ramirez or maybe mussina it. maddux/brown will be taken since autodrafters will have gotten them.

might want to look for A-rod if still available, but i dont know how he will play in first year on a new team(i.e. ken griffey jr.)

I agree to that you need to concentrate on pitching first...you'd be surprised how much of a difference one man can make on a team.

I'd pick Nomar out of those listed, he's injured right now, but it's not major. If not him, probably Delgado. However, Jeter and Piazza have always been very consistent.
