1) 14 guys from the office (me included) create a fantasy football league.

2) The commish approaches everyone and asks; "what would you like to bet?" My response was; "no more than $100"

3) No money was collected. No betting rules/$$$ are posted on the league's site.

4) I am a moron when it comes to fantasy football. I auto drafted. I have not made any moves yet (week 3 - I am making moves now, because of back to back bye weeks and a few injuries) and I am apparently dominating; 300 plus points so far, 3 win streak. And, I know jack shit about football stats and players. I understand the game and watch football, but when it comes to 10 point gain per 1/2 yard interception, conversion roll over push back drop off,.. I know NOTHING.

5) Last night, 2 of the ladies in this league post a message saying; "Oh, Joe and I are betting for burgers and beers!! Join us if you like guys!!"

As of yesterday afternoon, the casual conversation on the money wagered was $50 a head. Again, no money collected, no betting rules posted on the side. But, the general impression is that at the end, $50 per person will be collected.

Looks like there won't be ANY money prize, I am almost certain everyone else will follow suit - which I am OK with, since I didn't lose anything. But, since I don't do this every year,.. is this type of behavior common?

Do people back out like this, so early? I thought stat games like this experience comebacks all the time??

Also, waivers. During week three, people were BITCHING about having rank 8 plus on the waivers and a crappy team and how they should be allowed to get 1st choice. I personally disagreed - but, I kept my mouth shut, because of point #4.

Aaand, 14 players is too much, isn't it??

Either way, I don't think I'll play with these guys again. Sounds like this league is filled with red flags, no?

Yup. Always collect up front or boot them from the league and replace.

Edit: 14 players is fine, lets you explore depth of teams more. I prefer 10 team leagues myself.

14 team leagues are good for those who really like the game, it forces you to look well beyond the regular household names to identify guys that can contribute on your roster. When you have an 8 team league, there will be virtually no trading because every team is essentially stocked with talent, and it's just a matter of what guys deliver. With a 14 team league, you have to do some research and figure out what players are going to be good before they hit the bigtime.

With regard to your league, all expectations and costs should be made clear to everyone up front and collected. That way there's no backing out. If someone doesn't want to pay up, boot them from the league and replace them with someone else.

Fantasy Footbal...go out and enjoy life and leave these stupid games behind.

I was in a baseball league 7 years ago,.. I didn't see the excitement then. Figured I'd give the fantasy league games another shot.

I don't think I'll try this again.

Are they betting, or is the league a money league and they just didn't collect yet? (always a bad idea to not collect before the draft, there will always be someone who is 'that guy' and drafts awful then refuses to pay and play).

Every league I've ever been in was a paid league (ranging from $20 a person to $100 a person), and the winner gets the lion's share of that money at the end (~70% on average, I'd say). And even then, there is always that one guy whose friend pays for him and he doesn't repay him for months, but is in the running to win money.

It was an unofficial money league - that now seems to be moving to a non-money league.

I am certain that if these two 'beer and burgers' ladies were doing well, they would be 1st to wave their dicks in everyone's faces and start shopping for where they would spend their money on.

The 'good news' is that the commish is in 2nd place - and he is a degenerate gambler. I doubt he wants to lose his 2nd place winnings,.. or possibly his 1st place winnings.

Collect first. Otherwise some people after the draft will be "I got a shit team, I ain't paying".

dumb thread, but I'll respond

it's a work league. making it for money is a bad idea, especially if you are getting beginners to join. also, if you hadn't decided for sure what the cost would be by the time the season started, it's too late.

We force default auto-drafts on people who don't pay their dues on time.

Usually takes care of that problem.

If you haven't agreed on fees before the season starts, there are no fees. It sounds like you just have a casual league and somebody was trying to make it mean something. If not everybody is of the same opinion than it just won't work out.

If it's a money league, dues and payouts need to be agreed to by everyone (preferably buy-ins collected by draft time). I would just keep this league casual.

Not for money? Dont waste your time on it. And it sounds like a joke of a league, so if it ever is for money, don't join.
