At one point they false-alarmed on a file buried inside the full-file Service Pack 2 installation file, so I emailed them about that (along with probably eleventy billion other people) and they emailed back saying they would get it fixed, and another email saying it had been fixed. So hopefully you'll get a reply telling you when it's resolved, too.

If for one reason or another you don't trust AOL Active Virus Shield, or you would rather pay for an anti-virus, please consider purchasing Kaspersky Personal 6.0 or NOD32. Both offer industry-leading virus detection, rootkit detection, have small installers (<20MB), low resource usage, and offer daily definition updates. Honestly you can't go wrong with either one.

Should add Bitdefender 10 to that list,has a much lower cpu usage then 9.5 version.

I'm probably one of the very few that went from Kaspersky 6 to Bitdefender 10.

Try this:

1) open the Settings

2) In the Protection panel, uncheck this box :camera: for the real-time protection

3) In the Scan > Customize panel, go to the Additional tab and uncheck this box :camera: for the scheduled scans and manual scans.

Sorry for taking so long to get back. Neither of those boxes are available in this free version. Thanks for taking the time to try and help though. I just disabled real time scanning all together and am running daily scans.

Their auth server must be down, trying to put it on another computer and the key has not come in yet (been 3 hours).

I am using this on XP on my main system, since i actually managed to pick up a virus for the first time in years (my own stupidity caused it...)

But when i installed it on my dual boot Vista RTM, it BSODed...

Can't find anything on google about incompatibility with Vista, but for me, it sure as hell isn't working.

It messed things up pretty bad; i have to reboot & see what happens since i finally got it to uninstall (refused to; kept BSODing).

But i'd mention that use with Vista might be potentially dangerous if you get the same f*ck up as i did.

It won't even let me install on my Vista 32bit. I know Kaspersky has a beta version out for Vista but it's not the free AOL version.

Avast home free edition works with all versions of Vista, you only need an email address to register for a free key just like AOL ,true it's not as good as the AOL Kapersky version but it does work 100% with Vista.

UnderPantKnome, uninstall Antivir, install AOL AVS, reinstall Antivir. However I do not recommend having multiple AV's install even if one has real-time disabled. The Antivir nag screen (although it can be disabled if you know how) and lack of pop3 email protection is one of the many drawbacks.

Mem, IMHO Avast! is a lousy AV with inferior detection rates and a lousy interface. Since you like Bitdefender and own a copy you may be interested to know that BitDefender Announces Beta Release of Security Protection for Microsoft Windows Vista

I am not aware of any quality freeware AV's for Vista. Cough up a few bucks and purchase Kaspersky or NOD32.

I don't want to go through the process of uninstall/reinstall (yea I'm lazy). For some reason I prefer Antivir so I'm gonna stick with it and use an online scanner as backup. How come you don't recommend multiple AV's install?

John:I think you missed my point,I was just stating that Avast is 100% compatible with Vista for those that use Vista,I use Bitdefender and I'm very happy with version 10 on my XP(not upgraded yet to Vista),FYI I know some people that find Avast good enough for them,end of the day we all use different AV and I can respect other peoples opinions even if their so called AV is not in the top 10 .


Even a basic AV with common sense can go a long way towards protection.I have tried Avast ,Kaspersky,Panda,Trend Micro,Anti-Vir ,AVG, etc... all in the pass and never had any virus problems,mainly due to using common sense and keeping them updated etc...

Btw John I'm still trying to figure out what Vista Home Premium version to go with ,32 bit or 64 bit, let alone AV for Vista .

Have him simply go back to the site and go through the motions again, and if the keyserver is up he should get his email right away. Otherwise I have a couple of unused keys, I could PM you one.

I have never pimped anything unlike you who constantly pimp AOL. I tried to link to free antivirus thread with a varity of free antivirus products so they don't have to listen to your constant AOL pimping.

If it's for business use, then use Symantec, because the free antivirus isn't licensed for anything but non-commercial home use.

If you took the time to read my original post you would clearly see that I provided a link to the The Consolidated Security Thread which is also stickied at the top of this forum. I encourage people to do their own research, however we continue to see "what is the best" threads in every forum because some people refuse to do their own research. By you continuing to recommend AVG it's obvious that you fall into the same crowd of the uninformed and uneducated since you run both AVG and Avast! on your own computer(s). As I've stated before you become hostile when anyone questions your motives, and it's obvious that trying to reason with you is going to be a futile attempt. :roll:
