I am very surprised by this, I really wouldn't have expected a big name studio to revamp a game via that sort of "expansion" nowadays. It's not like they're "just" adding more to the already existing Far Cry 3, like a new map for the expansion to unfold on, or new weapons and new NPCs (or, you know, like most expansions happen to do that we've known so far). They literally redid the assets (probably most of them), obviously changed the "mood", the story and its context, and adopted a completely different art style to fit the obvious 1980's sci-fi vibe going, which in and of itself looked and sounded awesome (credits where due).
After watching the trailer I had that very nice and long-dormant (since long gone) feeling of just having finished watching some Transformers episode (of the original TV series) during my pre-teenage years. They captured the "old" fashion animated style, the cheesy dialog, the exaggerated action scenes and the overall feeling of the comedy strip style of the 1980's sci-fi entertainment nearly perfectly (I say nearly since... well nothing is perfect). But really, to reiterate, I am almost baffled as to both why and how (how come) they decided to actually do that at all to start with. How did they manage to convince themselves internally that it would be financially viable to "try" it? It really seems like a gamble to me anyway. I mean they're a business, right? Or did they have some sort of sudden out of the blue eureka moment when they realized that they could also make a game that they actually want to try because they think they'd have fun in developing it too?
Well anyway, no matter I guess, it's going to happen and I am actually more interested by that one than I am by Far Cry 3 (I played it on the 360 but I haven't bought it yet for the PC). I am pretty sure that Far Cry 3 will be required to play that "expansion", but even if it doesn't then I'm sure they'll include it in some package at release (on Steam surely). So I think I'm just going to wait until they complete that one and I might end up getting Far Cry 3 along with it. I truly am interested by this and cannot wait to see more of it in action.
If there's only one thing I am sure of right now is that above and beyond anything else I might think of big name studios since the past few years is that I have to respectfully nod and show thumbs up to Ubisoft at this obvious "gambled" effort (a good one at that) to release an expansion pack at all in this current DLC dominion market. And not only that, but to actually basically re-do most of their work and assets for said expansion to try something fresh rather than going down the "let's just add a map or two with a couple of new weapons and enemies" route that most expansion packs ever managed to do... and to top it with the fact that all of that comes from Ubisoft?
I rarely say this but I think I'm sold... I think (nah I am, seriously).
