Far Cry + HDR + x1900

Anyone get HDR to work with x1xxx cards and how are you doing it?
I input \r_hdrrendering 7 and nothing happens.
This is with AA off...

I'm using Cat 7.7 w/Vista but I recall it also happening with previous Cats and on XP.
Hope I'm just missing a tiny detail. BTW, I'm on patch 1.33 since I'll be playing Single player (as some of you know, 1.4 has a single player all knowing enemies bug)

IIRC you need to have one of the detail settings turned to maximum for it to work. Lighting quality or something like that.

Yeah that's what I'm wondering. Maybe that's why it was so incredibly hard last time I played through?

I'm pretty sure I have. I turned up everything max and set water quality to Ultra

The enemies can completely see through semi-transparent things like canvas tents and since bullets can pass through said tents, you cant hide from their bullet pummeling.

I also had the same issue, I used the Custom Config to put everything on highest and no matter what settings I used, never was able to use HDR with FSAA. Sheesh. ¬¬

Try installing the 1.41 fanmade patch. I think it's supposed to roll back many of the changes in 1.4. I vaguely remember something mentioned here last year about the HDR not working on ATI cards without a certain patch, but I don't remember which one was needed.

Hey, thanks for the heads up on the user made patch!
I have no idea why HDR doesn't want to work @ all, though :-|

You need to use the 1.4 BETA patch to get HDR+AA working together. Once you do that, you have to turn AA and HDR on this way:

To enable HDR and AntiAiasing:

1) Copy/overwrite the files to your existing Farcry game.
2) Start the game and Select your desired FSAA mode (2-4-6) in the Farcry video menu.
3) Go to the console (~) and ...

type \r_FSAA 2 now press Enter.
type \r_HDRRendering 1-11 ("7" looks best, "2" is also nice and has better performance) again press Enter, exit the console (~) and enjoy.

thanks dude, but I know that the beta patch has some similar issues with infinite ammo, etc and I dont know if its worth the hassle...

Oh well, game looks nice with 14xAA w/ TrAA

It might be possible to get HDR+AA by renaming the exe to Oblivion.exe (this works in SCCT, for example), without using the buggy 1.4 beta patch. The problem is how to get HDR in the first place.

I need to load up FC again and see if HDR works. I was going to play it through again but haven't gotten around to it yet.

HDR looks nice in some day outdoor levels and the dawn/dusk scenes, but a lot of times it is grossly overdone and just looks bad in FC. The worst is in dark indoor scenes when you enter a room that has a bunch of lights. All you see is the HDR and it is blinding sometimes

You have to tone the HDR parameters. The default values are way too high. It can actually look really good in many of the indoor areas. It still looks messed up if you look straight up at the ceiling, but how often do you do that anyway.

HDR in Far Cry indoors wasn't that bad, in the outside during daylight it's hard to differentiate. In night time it's a joke, When you look at the sky, you see the rest of the area getting so bright that's blinding, it's a total joke, the best HDR implementation ever seen in a game was in Half Life Episode 1 and it's derivates and games based on that game like Dark Messiah. Oblivion HDR is not bad, but is a bit unrealistic in the forest area at dawn.

You need to get a hold of dug77, that's his favorite game and if anybody can help you it's him.

There are three extra settings in addition to the main hdrrendering one. These seem to be the default values:

r_HDRBrightOffset = "6.000000"
r_HDRBrightThreshold = "3.000000"
r_HDRLevel = "0.600000"

I don't remember what good values for these things are, but they make a big difference to how the HDR effect looks. You have to play around with them a bit.
