I suppose I could go on all day about how much 9 sucks and that 8 was better in many ways, but getting beyond that, it's a usefull program. BTW, it's $20 w/o the upgrade rebate.

I'm not terribly expert in either Ghost 8 (if that was what was in Systemworks 2003) or 9, but backing to an external HD worked with 9 and bombed with 8.

But if you're running one of those, what's the downside?

The main point is that 9.0 breaks away from the way we did things with previous versions. For me, things are so different that I'm just not sure I trust it yet. Doing incremental images is nice, as well as the ability to image while the OS is running. But, hell, they don't even use the sae file extensions ... at least it didn't seem to be case when I briefly tried it.

If you are new to Ghost, only run the latest Windows (2000 and later), and must have serious uptime, go for 9.0. Many of us have gotten comfortable with 8.0 and are more than willing to work with its nuances.

I have liked both Acronis, Ghost 9.0 and Drive Image(now Ghost 9). All have worked fine with, pretty easy to understand.
I have recently bought more Acronis than Symantec.

with Ghost have a problem with imaging to a new drive ... never seems to get the boot part correct. (yes, i know fix mbr,fix boot etc)

but it still sucks

does ghost 9.0 do a better job than 8 of dealing with imaging to a new drive?

I have used the new 9.0 and am getting ready to go back to the old dos boot menu instead with ghost 8.0.
Sure it's nice to use in a windows enviroment but if you only have one partition on your hard drive with no other to image to, it will image fine to the existing hard drive but it Will Not be able to restore that image from the same place due to image being located on the drive that needs restoring back to, even though it was able to create the image on the same drive !
And my god is it freakin slow, took over 12 hours to restore a 12gig image file.
I once restored a nice AlienWare top of the range laptop with 2x60g 7200 drives in raid 0 with a dvd image and it took less than 6 mins and that was using ghost 8.0.

yeah, ghost 8, 9 makes it easier for a home user to make scheduled backups but frankly, it sucks for any professional applications and sacrifices many abilities to ease of use

How does acronis registration work, does it register online based on your windows/hardware installation, so if you change your hardware or reinstall windows, you need to call them each time?

There is no product activation in Acronis.

You don't even need to keep it installed you need it only to create the bootable cd.

I do all features with the boot cd.

On a serious note, what is the big shortfall with 9?
If you're a long time Ghost user, you will not recognize Ghost 9. Ghost 9 is little more than a backup program, with some Windows drive imaging features tossed in. Seriously different (and castrated) from all previous versions and is in fact just a Symantec branded version of PowerQuest Drive Image.

Drive Image 7 had these problems:

1. bloated as hell
2. recovery disc was just a recovery disc you needed to make images under windows.
3. required .net framework
4. required 256megs of ram
5. error prone

drive image 6 fit on two floppies..

BTW, if you have an IBM system, try using their "IBM Rescue and Recovery" application. It's a FREE download.

Very similar to Ghost 9.... you can create an image on a hidden partition, antoher drive, a network drive, usb drive, CD/DVD, etc.

To restore, you can do it via a BIOS boot option, boot CD, or from within windows.

Also does incrementals.....

Fairly basic program, 400mb download, but ti works....and is reliable. We have hundreds of sales people in the field.....it has saved them many times when they kill messup thier OS.

We expect with DVD burners becoming more popular, they'll soon make their on DVD backups to protect them from HD failure also.

Ghost 9.0 seems easy for n00bs like me.

Is Acronis True Image just as easy for n00bs?
