but how do you think your food gets cooked in a microwave?
Microwaves will never give you cancer

That gives me a sweet idea for a practical joke. Remove the microwave emitter from the microwave and replace it with a UV emitter. The waves are small enough to escape through the holes in the door and cook the person watching their food

Unless you're going to tempest-proof every single cable and wire coming from your house, a faraday cage can't help you, nooooooooob!

WE ARE THE GOOGLE. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Ground is an interesting term in engineering, as it doesn't exactly refer to the physical ground, but a large conducting plane with low resistance. I think in general all that's required of 'ground' is a large conducting surface for charges to spread out on and thus minimize the field strength. Your cellphone has a ground plane.. it's not connected to 'ground'
Keyword is "large". Should have added thick as well. No ground IRL is a TRUE / PERFECT ground - that would have to be infinite in extent to be truly equipotential everywhere.

I love how loosely some people use the word "radiation" just to get a shock reaction. Radio waves, light, kinetic energy (water ripples)...everything that "radiates" is technically "radiation."

Something that radiates isn't necessarily radioACTIVE.

Nuclear radiation gives off sub-atomic particles that have a tendency to "flip bits" in your DNA. That's not quite the same as electrons and photons...very different in fact.

Energy radiates if it's used. That's what it does.

My monitor is radiating photons at my eyes right now. My eyes are made to absorb photons and I don't have eye cancer...yet.

What's going to protect your tinfoil? You should probably put some tinfoil around your tinfoil.

Yo dawg. I heard you like tinfoil so I put some tinfoil on your tinfoil and wrapped it in tinfoil.

A faraday cage requires any grounded metal. My computer case isn't grounded and neither is yours.
Helloooo? A case *IS* grounded!

This is why your motherboard can "short" if not installed properly and will fail to function.
WHAT?! *head explode

That's COMPLETELY backward. A motherboard can short out on the case BECAUSE it's grounded! It doesn't have to create a bridge between two points on the motherboard to be a cause a short circuit. In can cause a short by touching any single conductor that has electricity going through it. BECAUSE the case is grounded, electricity can travel through it. When electricity doesn't travel through the intended path, that's the definition of a short circuit. FFS!

Any PC maintenance guide will tell you to 1) shut down the PC, 2) touch the metal on the PC chassis and 3) then disconnect the AC power cord. This ensures that some of the potential charge in your body is equalized to ground...because the chassis is grounded.

Good to see everyone already set him straight. WOW.

Sadly, we could make the food in the US a hell of a lot safer by using ultraviolet radiation to kill a lot of the microorganisms (i.e. E. Coli). But, people see the word "radiation" and freak out. Tis pretty sad.

Another one I remember from this science show I watched 10 years ago was radiating stuff with radioactive cobalt. It kills everything. Even cock roaches. Unfortunately people are stupid as hell and would rather have our food filled with pesticides. Then there are people who don't like radiation or pesticide, so they just eat the e.coli D:

Thanks, I've now covered my eyeballs in tinfoil and it really hurts.

So it turns out that the EMF from most of our PCs are not good for our bodies, especially brains for those of us who have them.

I was told by a friend that Faraday Cages should be used on desktops to prevent long term ill effects.

This is somewhat analogous to the radiation damage that, according to some scientists, prolonged usage of cellphones might cause in the long term.

What is the consensus on this?

More importantly, how close to the CPU do you guys/girls sit?

I try to stay about 3-5 feet away from my desktop and the constant hum of the fans, although white noise after a few minutes, are highly irritating. Oh, I'm planning to get some Delta case fans by the way!

Anyone use a Faraday Cage on the desktops?

In fact even a wireless network bathes us in constant radiation.

I guess our systems, that is, our bodies, are impervious to the ill effects of low radiation levels of WiFi etc. but still, it's something to think about.

I mean, 40 years down the road, could they lead to brain damage or some other sort of ailment(s)?

You sir, are an idiot.

facepalm

Edit: nevermind. Look it up.

I looked it up. Pretty sure the chassis is grounded via the power supply. I guess you could decouple the two by using a rubber isolator and non-conductive screws. I suppose many have isolators to lessen vibration, but I don't know anyone using non-metal screws to hold the PSU in there.

Then, of course, there's the motherboard ground plane that probably has a lead back to the PSU, which is, itself grounded. Not to mention the metal screws holding the PSU in the case.

not a good idea to op.without the covers on. Short wavelength radiation. Your microwave oven op's on this principal.

I'm sure you cook your food in your computer case all the time. I wouldn't believe how much radiation is in that thing!

really? people get all pissy about zapping their produce with UV light? lol wtf.

are these the same people that go to the dentists and shove those lights in their mouths for whitening?

Not to mention, the same people who chug bottled water which probably had UV as a step in the filtration process.

Ummmm... the Faraday cage blocks the electromagnetic waves, it doesn't radiate.

Oops, had to re-educate myself. I've come across another Faraday-like invention that was a charged mesh and did radiate as a way of scrambling signals. I mixed them up.
