A farewell to my little one.

She came to us, a little pudgy football of a kitten. Fleas, worms and all.
She had been roughly treated, and the one thing she wanted more than anything in the world was love, and love is what she got. We called her "Munchkin", or "Munch" for short.

We laughed so many times at her antics, grabbing at your heels when you walked by, her coarse 'meow' that she never really managed to get right. She touched my heart - in a way I'll never forget.

She also came to us with FIP. (Feline Infectious Pertonitis) It is always fatal, and this morning at 9:30 a.m., she breathed her last - and died in my arms.

There is a new little grave in my backyard - for the little one who brought us so much joy, for so short a period of time. She didn't die alone, and she didn't die unhappy - she lived her last weeks like queen, waited on hand and foot, eating the finest meals, drinking cream.

For those of you who were aware, her fight is over... and she fought a good one against insurmountable odds. This morning, my heart is broken. My little girl is gone.

Rainbow Bridge

A child once asked of one old and wise, if animals go to heaven. The reply:

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. It is called Rainbow Bridge because of its many colors.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills and valleys with lush green grass and warm spring weather for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; the old and frail animals are all young again; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. All the animals are happy and content, except for one small thing. They each miss someone who is very special to them - the one who loved them on earth, and had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent! The eager body begins to quiver! He or she stops playing and looks up! The nose twitches! The ears are up! The eyes are staring!

Suddenly he or she begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his or her legs carrying him or her faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together?.never again to be?.Separated.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss!

I know all to well the feeling as I lost my friend of 17 1/2 years back on the 1st of April and it was very difficult for me.

Many heartfelt thanks to those who sent their wishes both in PM and in this thread. Something that's hard for folks sometimes to understand, is that for those of us without children, losing a pet causes almost as much heartbreak as losing a child. (obviously I don't, and can't equate the two - but it's certainly significant - enough to make a grown man sob like a child for an entire day)

Luckily we have 3 other cats, 4 bunnies, 2 goats, a slew of chickens, and a couple of pheasant that need to be cared for - and that also helps.

This one was particularly bad, because she was 100% dependent upon us for 24x7 care. She got multiple doses of various medications around-the-clock, and it tears at your heart when you know that she was absolutely totally in need of being cared for. We had to clean her, help her to the litterbox, etc. But... she fought this disease with a determination to live that I've never seen. She shouldn't have lived anywhere near as long as she did. For that -- I am grateful, and I know she knew we loved her. She was a scrappy little girl, and I pray that the "rainbow bridge" story is true.

I almost made it through the day today, until I passed her grave. Then - all the pain came back. I know it'll get better with time, and thank you all once again for your kindness. It really helped. :brokenheart:

It always amazes me how close we are to our pets, and we keep coming back after the pain of losing them. They give us a lot but they also allow us to give of ourselves and maybe that is the greatest gift of all. <---to hide red eyes

I have always said that if my dogs don't go to heaven I don't want to be there.

My sympathies for your loss. It's nice though that she was able to find a fine home, and a fine caregiver. Compared to the life she probably had before, she was already in a heaven of her own.
