So any idea why there processor is running at 100%? Maybe he happened to DL some "unapproved" files which were virus infected? I'd go check that out ASAP..bwhahaha.

:Q Whoah! :Q

JOB#1: KEEP JOB

That means, in this circumstance you should immediately volunteer remove it from all the pc's because you understand that it's currently an "unfortunate distraction to all the important projects we are working on right now", and volunteer documentation as to the technical nature of the program, and support areas should there be a problem discovered with it (the millions of pc's running it, support base, security issues, etc)

Arguing isn't good with your manager, and if you walk in prepared with an argument, the backup argument, etc... a communication failure will occur. You should be informative and helpful, not with arguments prepared. If this convinces you not to argue about it... remember, education and the volunteering idea is important...

Indy, you're a valuable member of our TeAm, you need to take care of yourself!

K! GATHER ROUND!!! TEAM HUG!!! Sometime's ya gotta take the hits...

What Bigwoofer said! It's not worth it to do end runs around people that you have to continue working with... political memories are long and there's always someone ready to take you down... Keep the big picture in mind...

I think Bigwoofer and GeoffS have good points there. The slender reed bends in the hurricane, right?

All the same, I'm with the others who are wondering what is using up his CPU cycles. If SETI isn't installed, why is he blaming you/SETI? At the risk of stating the obvious, Task Manager will show what's using the CPU cycles, assuming it's an NT-based OS. Or maybe he's just looking at the pretty graph instead of the list of programs/services, with their corresponding % CPU usage...

It certainly would be amusing if you started out all conciliatory, and drag the IS director over to the computer in question, only to find it's something along the lines of what ShotgunSteve suggested. Then again, you could play good guy, offer to discretely fix the problem, and gain the tacit understanding that "I saved you from making a fool of yourself, and SETI is good. Yes? Yes."

Just don't lose your job for SETI, it's not the end of the

I'm so sorry to hear that Indy :|

I think that the best thing is to go and offer to work out what IS using 100% processor usage. If it is a program that he uses for his "work" (not Seti, as you said you uninstalled it) and his computer is feeling sluggish, maybe it's time for some maintenence and an upgrade?

But, the most important thing here is tact, subtlety and communication, so that you don't lose your job. It's definately not good going in all guns blazing.

If some people do stay a little later doing work, try changing the times the service starts to a little later. Because the same number of computers running for less time is definately better than no computers running at all!

Take care Indy, and good luck

Sounds like this #&$&#^$& needs to have his desktop replaced with an "Etchasketch" laptop. No worries about CPU utilization, and very easy to reboot. Just hold over your head and shake.

I agree with what a lot of others have said. Keeping your job is priority1.
Depending on your working relationship with the powers that be, prepare to have reasonable justifications for SETI, including thinking about every objection possible, and having a good sound answer for each objection. Good luck with it.

And if that doesn't work,
Rowdy Ray hands IndyJaws his titanium cane. Feel free to *whack* some sense into this jerk.

I didn't think about it till later, but at work we had several people in our dept. affected by 100%cpu usage... their pc's would freeze up for awhile, and drive my team members INSANE!

Anyway, turned out to be a norton antivirus issue that required a registry "touch-up" to correct. Worked like a charm. Now other things drive my team members insane...

I got really lucky by finding a driver like Alertsvc or something causing the 100%, and did a google search like cpu usage 100 and alertsvc. Our IT dept had already reimaged one of our team members drives to "correct it" which I can appreciate in a high volume environment.

Ray, give him the lead cane... the titanium is too light, what Indy needs is more force...heavier cane = more pain. more pain = happier Indy

Hopefully all will turn out OK. I'm not a software or IT guy, but there's a program that starts up every night on my PC here at work called Diskeeper. When it starts up, the CPU utilization pegs out at 100%. BTW, anybody know what Diskeeper is? Some kind of backup utility?

Diskkeeper is a disk defrag tool. It was very popular with NT 4.0, which didn't come with a defrag tool.

That's it because this is an NT 4.0 PC.

Edit: I just found the program and changed the run times to day shift! Bwahahaha!

Um, you don't want your computer trying to defrag while you're trying to use it.

IndyJaws,

This is indeed sad to hear! I too have had a department manager make me take SETI of of some computers even though it was set to run after hours and weekends. The problem came when they had a few people come in on the weekend to do some work and saw the process running at 100%.

I wish you the best in your sales job to get your farm back up and running!
