Fast DSL/Cable Router/Switch

Currently, I have a Linksys DSL/Cable Router (BEFSR41). I've been using it for about four years now. Overall, it works good, but I think the bandwidth throughput is slow and the firmware is buggy. Connecting to FTP is tricky and there are problems with passive mode, etc.

About six months ago the power supply started making howling noise. So I think its days are just about over. Plus the firmware is buggy. I cannot connect to FTP servers when using certain firmware builds.

I'd like to get a new DSL/Cable Router with at least 4x100mb network switch support. What is the best DSL/Cable router right now?

Here are some models I am considering right now.

Netgear

Model RP614 4-Port Cable/DSL Router with 10/100 Mbps Switch

Model FR114P 4 Port Cable/DSL ProSafe Firewall/Print Server

Linksys

BEFSX41 Instant Broadband EtherFast®Cable/DSL Firewall Router with 4-Port Switch/VPN End
http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=34&scid=29&prid=433

They're all about the same price. Really I want to stay away from Linksys, but 3COM backs them. I have not had a Netgear router. It is any good?

What is the best DSL/Cable router right now in terms of speed (bandwidth throughput) and security?

Thanks,

Kuphryn

for home use, does it really matter?

routers today are appliances, just buy a toaster from wal-mart

get one from lynksys. they seem to be the most popular brand nowadays. Netgear is a very very close 2nd.

like everyone said, get the cheapest POS you can unless you need VPN or an SPI firewall..netgers SPI firewalls older handle 1.5Mbps of SPI traffic IIRC..no sure about hteir new stuff

When it comes down to it, unless you have Optimim Online where you get 10Mbps of traffic bandwidth, it will NOT make a difference. As for iLAN traffic, as long as it has a switch it will be fine. I would wager that that the cable and NICs you use make more of a difference in performance than the built-in switch itself.

I'll admit SMC and BUffulo are great, but in the end they are all POS compared to even a old 2500 Cisco router

VLSM BITCHES HAHAHAHA!!!!

EDIT:

And by the way, if Netgear is a POS, then why does EMC use them internally in their SYMMETRIX ARRAYS?!?!?

I'll admit Netgears WAN performance using SPI is ridiculously slow, but as for quality, thir wire equipment is fine. Their wireless stuff , jsut like with any onther consumer company, is VERY unreliable.

I have had 3 linksys routers die on me in the last 3 years.
One won't boot properly
One crashed while updating firmware
One didn't really die, but two of the ports are broken, so i trashed it.

I made my own router/firewall out of an old PC and using Freesco 0.32.

Works great and very reliable.
