Not the US, but have _definitely_ noticed fast-food becoming prohibitively expensive here, over the last couple of years. To the point where I no longer eat it (a good thing, really, though the only reason I ever ate the stuff was because it used to be cheap).

Haven't patronised any of the big name chains for a very long time, because the likes of McDonalds have always been very expensive. But I did use to sometimes resort to the cheap no-name chicken places that would do fried chicken and chips for £2. Those now have gone up to more like £4-5 so not worth the health-hit when they aren't even cheap any more. I suspect many will go out of business, as being cheap was their USP.

Makes me laugh though that so often any criticism of the likes of McDonalds (for being bad for your health) gets a reaction that you are just being snobbish because 'poor people' eat at McDonalds, when in fact they have always been quite expensive. Heard the same with respect to criticism of supermarkets like Tesco,, usually coming from faux-populists who are too wealthy to notice that Tesco is actually quite expensive and relatively up-market.
The truth is that all levels of society likes McDonald's, so you'll find one in every locale, although nicer areas might have nicer interiors.

Just like Papa Johns in the U.S. The difference is more in the local area's preferred way of payment and willingness to tip. Everyone eats yesterday's aristocratic ingredients these days. One can say Americans have no standards for quality food, but it's not because of money or lack thereof.

Right now I'm eating a large pepperoni pizza from Little Caesars. Receipt for it says $7.35.

I'll get two meals out of it. And I didn't have to wait around for it to cook ( "hot 'n ready" menu item).
Good value still.
A couple years ago I was buying this large pizza for $5.20. So price has risen 40%. 😬

Just about all the "fast food" places have effectively shut themselves out of the market with absurd pricing.

Got 2x large meal-combos (2x double-burgers) at the Wendys drive-through the other night because GF was craving it?

$29.72 inc tax !! I was hoping for a little sexy-time so to make her happy I bit the bullet but good god!

For that price I could have had a large Pepe's pizza or a quality Chinese FEAST!

What the actual fvck!!! .... I will literally NEVER eat Wendy's again at that $ !!!

EDIT: GF paid me back for her super-fancy pretzel-burger combo when she saw the price so only $13 for mine....
still wtf.

How do you feel about fish and chips prices increasing?

Article here from two day ago are saying (at least at his shop) fish and chip is getting expensive.

"Lionel Cobley, the restaurant’s co-owner, says costs for his ingredients have gone up 30% to 40%, forcing the restaurant to up its prices. A plate of cod and chips eaten in store now goes for 14.90 British pounds (about $18), putting it out of reach for many looking for a cheap weekday meal."

Ah man! I went to get 4 large cod and chips and bits and pieces a little while ago and I think that it was about £50! This was takeaway and I don't live in a particularly expensive area. It was good but I could get a good pub meal for that price plus drinks.
TBF it's a lot cheaper if you get pies or battered sausage or anything other than cod really but still. £50! I sounded like my dad!

Funny I just got an email from Skip saying "we missed you!" because I have not ordered through there in a while and giving me a small discount on my next order. Don't tempt me like that!

Used to order almost every night when working night shift but at $30-$40 per meal it adds up. The night shift premium is only $15 extra per shift so I was not exactly getting ahead.

Didn't order take out once for this last set of nights. I recently subbed to Factor, I find it ends up way cheaper than takeout and been eating those meals on my nights. I don't get a box weekly, I skip 2-3 weeks at a time but I get the biggest box they have since it's cheaper per meal, and just freeze them. So between that and stuff I make myself I have really cut back on take out. Though sometimes I feel like treating myself but I try to limit to like twice a month. Used to be like twice a week+. I would go through my CC bill and realize how much it all adds up.

Groceries in general have gone up, but in the grand scheme of things I find it's minor compared to all the other bills like property taxes, water/sewer, natural gas, etc... Just heard that CPP is going up again too. Always something. At least when it comes to food I can save by buying less junk food and eating out less.

In CA, minimum wage for fast food workers will be at $20/hr in April. That'll get those burger prices up.
Came in here to say that.
Years ago nyc made min wage at fast food places $15/hr. (But 1.25 tree can still pay fed min wage of $7.25/hr)
In 2024, maryland made min wage $15/hr for everyone.

I miss the days of .99 big mac.
Then came the .99 mcDouble which became 2 for $2.50.

now i have no idea how much the McDouble is since i havent looked in years since McD stopped offering free medium fries with $1 purchase in their App. (i get a small coffee)

Value from fast food is dead. Long live costo!
They still have a large whole pizza for $10 But no more combo pizza.
And the $1.50 combo hotdog is KING!

i save even more $ when Costco has a sale on their hot dogs so i dont even need to goto their food court.

Don't really eat it much, but, yeah, it's horribly expensive. Only takeaway food I eat is (was) occasionally those fried chicken KFC-knockoff places, purely because they are (were) cheap, when you really, really, can't be bothered to cook. But it's all priced itself out of the market now, as far as I'm concerned. If it's not cheap there's no point.

Still might go for the occasional chicken shish kebab, as I've already gotten used to that being expensive and it's (perhaps) the healthier end of the very greasy market.

Wages go up.

Prices go up.

Prices go up.

Wages go up.

Meanwhile corporate raiders report record profits and CEO packages.

Meanwhile, we Peons stop doing business with them.

Worse is how people just accept this. "But inflation is back down now!". No it's not, everything is still more expensive because every year prices go up so it's cumulative. What we need is deflation. Whatever bad things happens from that would not be as bad as just keeping the status quo of everything constantly going up in price. Apparently the official inflation numbers also don't count some of the bigger bills, like rent, natural gas or property taxes. So if it counted those things the reported percentage would be much higher.

This is actually an interesting article that talks about the big picture, as people tend to focus too much on only GDP to reflect how good a country is doing and on it's own it doesn't tell the whole story.

You can see how Canada basically just drops off the chart.

At the end of the day it basically means you need to work harder(higher end job) or more hours or both, to live the same you did before or buy the same things you could buy before with less.

Well I agree and disagree. Deflation is bad - it means people stop spending because they know things will get cheaper in future, and thus you tend to get a recession.

But I agree that inflation 'coming down' doesn't undo the decline in living-standards one has already suffered. What's needed is not deflation but for wages to go up.

I always hear that argument, but if you need something, you need it, so you buy it. The bills also still need to get paid regardless. You can't choose to not pay your bills because they'll be cheaper later. Sure you might wait to buy a big ticket item, but that shouldn't be considered bad. Ideally, there should be a point of stability. Stuff can't keep going down either. It would just reach a point of equilibrium.

The problem is that everybody wants infinite growth but that's not really sustainable.

I used to get a Chicken Quesadilla combo, extra crunchy taco, and fiesta potatoes at Taco Bell and it was like $10.

Now it costs like $16.

Fuck that.

I don't go there anymore and haven't eaten there in months because of that. Sometimes I crave TB but I don't crave it enough to spend that. I can just go to Chipotle or Jersey Mikes right by and get a bowl or sub for like $11 and it's going to be better for me as well.

It's also crazy how much prices vary based on locations. When I get my sons McDonalds happy meals, I get 2 of them for like $8.50.

Then one time we went to a different location just because of where we were, and I mean it's like probably 1 mile away as the crow flies, and it was like $12.50 for the same 2 happy meals. I thought the cashier got my order wrong but when I looked at the receipt, the prices were just higher.
Market pricing..Business 101. Whatever "the market" will bare.

Oh another thing about higher prices besides much higher min wage:
landlords doubling price of commercial rent

But that shouldnt affect McD since corporate stores own the land. (McD is not in the restuarant business. They're a Real Estate business)

Once again, Costco FTW!

Anecdotally, fast food prices are up generally over the last few years and particularly up since COVID. I've been ordering basically the same thing since college, and it's gone from $4+tax 20 years ago to $10-12 now. And yeah, the "value" meals are anything but. Basically just $1 off the fries and then you pay full price for whatever drink you get. Plus a lot of places advertise the price for the "small" but then default to a "medium" if you don't specify. Or they assume a large fry if you say you want a large soda. So you may end up paying $4-5 more than the posted price for the meal.

Plus tax, which varies too. (My county has a higher sales tax specifically for restaurants that was part of a stadium funding package a few years back.)

For franchise restaurants, prices can vary a lot between locations, especially if you're there for a specific sale item that they're not doing. On road trips I stick to McDonalds for Diet Coke and bathroom breaks - a large soda is anywhere from $1 to $2.50 depending on where I stop. The value menu doesn't really exist anymore either. Sandwiches that were $1 even 5 years ago are $3.50 now. In some cases, I think their materials/ingredient prices went up a lot - IIRC beef prices were why why the McDouble went from a $1 sandwich to a $3 sandwich basically overnight a few years ago. But when commodity prices went down, well, the price of the sandwich stayed the same.

There was also a tight shipping market for most of '22, which increased the prices of pretty much everything a little bit. (It cost more to get stuff from point A to B because it was basically a bidding war to get room on trucks.) And again, once prices go up, they don't go down.

So... yeah. It's more expensive. That said, if you're getting it via Doordash, you're adding another $10 minimum to the price usually, plus tipping the driver. I tried it a couple times then compared notes with the takeout menus and decided it was worth being my own delivery person.

Hard to beat a footlong hot dog, a big ass slice of pizza, and a Pepsi for $3.68 after tax. In the summer when it was too hot to cook in my house (our temps to got 105-109 pretty regularly when 97 would be normal) I'd go get that for dinner 3x a week or more.

mcDouble is 2 for $4 but just noticed on mcD app that double cheeseburgers are b1g1 so $3.20 for 2.

yeah, i bought at $1.60 cheeseburgers.
still higher than 1.25 McDoubles from years ago but i get an extra slice of cheese so about the same price
