I've been walking faster and faster and now can average 5 mph for a long distance (4-8 miles depending on the day). I'm using nike walkers. I wear EE width (sucks).
I'm 292 lbs.

On my right foot the front pad on my food on the left closest to big toe develops pain that almost feels liking bruising (like I'm pounding it).

Combination of weight - shoe, what else? What could I do. I have aspirations to start jogging when I reach 250 or so, and if I'm hurting now . . .

Runners/walkers of all shapes and sizes and fitness levels get lots of wonderful random pains For someone just starting, it's often just that you need to build up some strength. Unless it's to the point where it's stopping you from walking, or if it's continually getting worse, you can probably keep going and it will work itself out.

If it is bad, take it easy. It's better that you rest it and let it heal and come back strong than hurting yourself and stopping progress altogether. You can still do shorter walks that don't hurt as much.

It could be a shoe problem and that can be a finicky thing. Often there's not much you can do but try shoes until you find something that works for you.

Sometimes there's more than just cardio to overcome, but you can view it as just another challenge. Keep up the good work!

you need to see a sports physician/specialist. Have them review your condition and provide an estimate on what to do from there.

You don't want to have a weak skeletal foundation and then end up splintering your bones all over the place.

Usually pain means your body is trying to tell you something is wrong, you just need to figure out what.

How long have you been walking? This is quite normal when first starting after years of inactivity and deteroration combined with extra mass you are carrying now. Sorry to say but you got to work through it, strenghening muscles, tendons and ligaments in the legs and over time most all pain will go away. But really all runners have somthing going on. They have 1001 excuses saved up why they can't. The difference is they do and can't is not in thier vocab.

Don't worry about 1 hour, the other 23 hours that day feels great and worth it

Do they have an athletes foot where you live where they do computer mapping on feet/gait? Go big men need good shoes more than anyone. We are not built to run African plains barefoot.

ARE you using a HRM so you're not over doing it? Zone 3 for 45 min max is where you need to be now. Guys have a tendancy to over do things tearing shit up too.

Are you taking your vitamins , drinking lots of water and eating right so stuff repairs faster?

Course there may be something wrong anatomically but I doubt it.

Yeah, I'm no expert, but I've repeatedly heard the following tips:

1. figure out your foot type (normal arch or flat footed, etc.). You can go to a specialty running store, or you can observe your wet footprints to help determine...

2. buy walking/running shoes for your foot type (see the roadrunnersports website for more information, but there are shoe categories like "cushioning", "stability", etc. etc.)

I'm flat footed and have yet to do the above either. I just recently started as well, and I am having some foot pains, so I'll probably take my own advice here soon as well...

Good luck!
