Faster internet with Vista?

I installed Vista Ultimate 32 a couple of days ago, and noticed that my downstream net speeds have been insanely quick compared to what they were with XP Pro 32. I'm using the same wireless network that i was before. Is this possible, or am I just full of shit?

If it is within the limits of your internet speed then yeah, it is possible seeing that vista has a new tc/ip stack that ms claims to improve network performance. Though personally haven't seen any improvements except for a lower ping in online games.

Of course, if it is going faster than your internet speed should be then your full of shit

It's unlikely. However, it's entirely possible that there had been an issue with your XP setup which had slowed everything down.

I just had a flash back to the early days of the P4 where it was marketed as increasing your internet connection speeds.

I noticed downloads were quick to max out my bandwidth and are generally more stable. New stack FTW.

Wait until you try SP1...

I went from 130kb/sec to 180kb/sec - give or take!

And, a whole new kernel with SP1...

If that's the case then I should upgrade my Windows 2003 Server to Vista to get that improved through-put with that new IP stack, right? Gee, I can get 30% better gig performance on my Exchange server if I read you guys correctly.

I got money on the old installation being replaced with a fresh XP wipe (*minus* all the garbage 3rd party security clients some of you like to install) running just as fast. I have several machines with dual boot Vista/XP with T-1 access if we have anybody willing to bet here.

Win2K had a theoretical 15-20% better IP efficiency over XP, but it was only realized on the transmission end. Vista pulling data down from the internet faster than XP would only indicate something wrong with the XP box.

Maybe you missed the SP1 qualifier...

I didn't notice jack between W2K/XP Pro and Vista RTM on the TCP/IP stack!

Unless you're willing to take a chance on SP1 RC (read 436.3 MB beta upgrade), wait out the storm with the rest of the sock puppets...

I did, SP1 isn't required.

There are reasons in themselves why a fresh install would be faster. Personally I would give the technology the credit, I mean your network in vista is a all well and good but without the hardware or the connection between it really doesn't matter. I would have to say no to the idea that vista could make old technology faster, if that's the conclusion. Or maybe the conclusion is XP isn't being updated properly for new technology.

You didn't notice a spike with SP1!?!?!?

I noticed an improvement on downloads without SP1. I installed the RC1 of SP1 but it didn't like my DVD driver so I had to uninstall after a few hours. I sent the error report off so hopefully it'll get fixed.

Um...

Actually, how much downloading did you do with SP1 RC?

A few hours and you rolled it back?!?!?

Sounds like you upgraded and started watching movies...

Not much.

I'm trying to say SP1 isn't required to notice a significant difference over XP. They may have changed something in SP1 to improve it further, but I haven't read anything about that in the SP1 release notes or anywhere else. I max out my bandwidth so quickly with the RTM, it'd be hard to tell the difference.

Yeah, I didn't fancy running a machine where I knew I wouldn't be able to install applications/games, watch DVD's, rip CD's, burn stuff etc.

Willing to bet what? My cable connection can maintain 16Mbit downstream connections from hosts capable of sustaining the speeds.

I consistently download multiple torrents with some at @ 1.0+MBytes/sec speeds. A T-1 just seems.....so slow nowadays.

LINKAGE

You have to read between the lines, like most MS web pages.

Generally speaking, everything is brisker with SP1... so, maybe that's all it is, but...

You can see several references to faster file transfers, under a number of scenarios.

You're right - it doesn't specifically mention the phrase 'Faster Internet', however, I've noticed an increase - as well as many others on various blogs/forums.

I suppose it depends on your Internet connection, firewall, router, and all the rest of it...

The truth is out there :shiftyeyes;

It's safe to assume that's a factor.
