TL;DR
Which would you get and why?

14nm 6 core 10gen + slow RAM
Fast NVMe
Or
10nm 4 core 10gen fast RAM
slow NVMe

Application:
Gaming (with egpu)
Professional work/rendering (local only)
Large file transfers (not typically lots of small files)

I'm comparing the new xps 13 7390 from Dell.

They have two systems both meet my needs, but I'm trying to get the better of the two.

Laptop hardware
Core i7-10710U
UHD graphics
16GB LPDDR3 (20GBps)
512GB NVMe [1250MBps, 70Mbps Rnd4k, 800Mbps DQ4k] [will be even faster when I upgrade to 2TB drive]
2x TB3 PCIe 4x
1x USB 3.1 (I like the extra port for my business uses)
Finger Print
Card reader
4k HDR touchscreen

2-in-1 hardware:
Core i7-1065G7
Iris graphics (MX150 performance)
16GB LPDDR4X (soldered) [40GBps]
512GB NVMe (soldered) [700MBps, 40Mbps Rnd4k, 540Mbps DQ4k] [I really want/need 2TB)
2x TB3 PCIe 4x
Finger Print
Card reader
4k HDR touchscreen

The 2-in-1 looks to have a better CPU and GPU - bonus! But a soldered drive - ugh. Both have upsides and downsides.

Does the 2-in-1 have any other drive sizes? Are you positive it's not replaceable? Any chance it has an open spot for another?

Honestly, I wouldn't get either of these for several reasons. First, the soldered issue would be a no go for me. Also, I would be hesitant at getting a 10th gen CPU in a laptop, due to all the issues they had getting the 10nm process going. Now, I might consider the 14nm hexcore if it has same performance as the 9th gen i7 mobile series. This I am not sure of, I would have to check it out.

If you were to choose between the 2, get the top one, and like you said, you could replace the NVMe drive with a nice fast one at 1 or 2 TB. Now I know dell makes some nice XPS stuff, but I would stay away from soldered stuff, and I would like to get DDR4 if possible.

Is there another model Dell XPS or competitor that you could consider?
