Norton slows my comp down way too much with the "realtime checker" thing turned on. Is there anything that scans nearly as good and doesn't slow down regular usage so much?

Don't be fooled by AVG's detection rate though. I have been using AVG for quite some time and have never had any problems. And it being lowest on recources is a HUGE plus for people like me.

I was disappointed by AVG when it royally screwed up my ability to send email, so I went for the next most efficient one on SchadenTech's list, which is F-Prot. It also uses very little resources, and the SchadenTech roundup suggests that its detection rate is better than AVG. Been running it for about five months now, and am very satisfied ... it feels totally transparent, except when it is putting the kibosh on a would-be infection (as it did very effectively when I visited the wrong website a few weeks ago). F-Prot isn't free, but sometimes you don't get what you don't pay for.

Kaspersky is not exactly low on resources though...I'd say F-Prot is a good bet. Although AVG is also great considering the price (free).

yep, kaspersky is great. I wouldn't bother with Norton or *shudders* mcafee

"You have a virus... but we can't move it, delete it or quarentine it. Are you sure you want to do nothing about it. "

Damn do I hate Mcafee

I am happy with free Anti-Vir (2nd low on resource and high detection rate) on my laptop and Norton AV 2002 on my desktop...no reason for me to upgrade Norton AV 2005.

Basically from the reccomendations here you can get a basic idea of what everyone else thinks is the best, but everyone has their opinions. If you want the absolute best protection Kaspersky has the best detection rate. If you want something low on resources then use AVG. Anti-Vir may be a another solution as it's detection rate is the highest of the free ones yet does not take up much system resources. Another option may be to get a anti-virus and don't run it in the background. Instead run manual scans more often. That is what I do.

To determin exactly what would be best for you you need to do the research. Shad's anti-virus roundup would be a great start. Choose based on what is important to you most.

Kaspersky has got to have one of the slowest Real-Time detection engines in my experience. With AVG you don't even feel it's there. Symantec Antivirus (a.k.a. Norton Corporate) has been my favourite as of late (I used to use Kaspersky). I find it uses low resource and has quick scans. I don't know if you can buy that product alone as a home user, I got mine from school.

While I acknowledge the hardwork that Schadenfroh has done with his reviews, the detection rate results are only from one source. I understand they're not common, but I personally wouldn't use it as my decision maker. I see in some AV products another source is listed as well. If you look at avast, just between the two detection rate comparisons there is a big difference.

Also remember that amount of resources or "RAM used" does not directly affect the real-time detection speeds. The "boot time" would be more accurate if you would like to use Schadenfroh's review.

P.S. Schadenfroh, how many times did you run the boot-time tests for each AV product?

I use Kaspersky and dont even notice all this heavy resource usage you all claim it has. My pc is no power rig either.

If you're going the non-free route, look @ NOD32. Faster & lighter than most, yet awesome product; super fast system scans
