I’m looking to upgrade my ’server’ which basically runs Quickbooks and is setup for my bookkeeper and I to log into. It usually runs Win10 and a desktop CPU.

Might seem silly, but I want to take advantage of a spare Samsung Evo m.2 drive I have and the current MB doesn’t support it.

It doesn’t look like there’s any ’modern’ 35 watt CPU with anything more then dual core. Is that correct or am I looking in the wrong places?

Thanks Mark but it's 3rd party by not so highly rated sellers. Newegg has the OEM version for the same price. Microcenter has the Retail version for $150, but then I have to con a family member to get it and ship it to me.

Other than the case and the monitor, my 3700X parts all came from NYC, hand carried by my buddy :awe:

I saw newegg for $169, missed that Amazon was 3 pty. When in doubt I go Amazon, ever since newegg turned into jerks (when they got bought out) I had a product for on sale for $20 cheaper, even before the product was delivered to me. I chatted with newegg BEFORE and got a $20 credit. Not the new management.

Yeah I've learned to at least sort everything as sold and shipped by newegg, but that cuts down on options. It's weird, but a lot of these places, even CDW sell stuff provided by 3rd parties. B&H, Bestbuy, are all sold out of.

Put me in touch with your buddy if he's a fast shipper

Drats!

So hypothetical question, if I get either an AMD or Intel MB/RAM and then a cheap 'place holder' CPU - what would happen when I go to replace that CPU with the one I wanted? Will I have to reinstall Windows or any drivers while keeping the MB/RAM intact?

If you go Intel, most likely you will need a new motherboard later and a windows reinstall. With AMD, chances are it will go in with no problems, same motherboard.

Thanks Mark, but I mean if I wait a few weeks to a month for the CPU I want to come into stock. So say I get a 9th gen Intel i3 as a place holder and then the 9th gen (Coffee Lake) i5 I wanted later and do the swap or use a Ryzen 3 as a place holder till the Ryzen 5-3400G comes back into stock and then swap that.

Is they Ryzen 3-3200G comparable to the Ryzen 5-3400G?
It's 4 cores 4 threads without SMT compared to 4c8t. Since it can be overclocked it can reach a similar performance. You could even take a 3000G, it's 2c4t. But I don't know how much or little Quickbooks profits from additional threads.

No, win10 should be ok with that. Even if it is not happy you just need to re-validate.

But if you are willing to pay extra, why not just go to a Ryzen 5 1600AF desktop chip plus a dirt cheap video card? That chip is a great value.

YD1600BBAFBOX is the part number.

Should likely be no problem. Windows basically tunes itself to the mobo and platform when you install it. The chipset drivers, SATA ports, etc., at least on Intel are basically tied to the mobo. Swapping CPUs on the same mobo shouldn't be a problem.

You could just get this and call it a day

Fujitsu Mini Tower Server PRIMERGY TX1320 M3 intel Xeon (E3-1220v6/4C/4GB) Quiet and High Performance Server Ultra Compact https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZ4RWM6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_ExBwEb5MJFSE5

OMG! I could've used my old RAM too

And that led to this:

That would suck a lot more juice. And noisy as hell. It's a 2u server so not exactly small.

The e31220-v6 was introduced in 2017, e5640 was q1 2010

I run a R710 with dual L5640.

I know but it looked so sexy. I would have ordered the one you posted about but I ended up ordering an Intel platform shortly before I saw your post.

I’m going to reuse a CPU I already have until I can find an Intel ‘T’ chip in stock.

I don't think I have ever heard of rackmount server being called sexy.

Here, a rackmount UPS

lol I was referring to the specs of that box. A little outdated, but cheap and overkill for my task.
I have 2 of that ups plus 4 expansion modules. And another rack.
Even installed a 220v socket lol

Was supposed to move my stack to the rack but have been lazy.

Holy cow 220v? Is that the rack you are moving it into? Looks kind empty

The racks aren’t sexy, but they are tidy and neat compared to stacking boxes of PCs, routers, UPS, etc.
