Fastest Yet Cheapest Socket 775 CPU?

I don't have the money to shell out for a new motherboard, cpu and DDR3 Memory.

I currently have an e5400 in my mobo. a 2.7Ghz Dual Core.

I am looking for something that would run faster, but not break the bank like the extreme editions or anything.

You really aren't going to be able to pick up a vastly more powerful CPU for that socket without getting your wallet spanked. My best advice would be to put you money somewhere safe and keep saving until you can afford to move to a new socket. Your only other viable option is to pick up a second hand chip superior to yours for the 775 socket

Grab a 45nm quad core, like Q8300 and overclock close to 4Ghz if you have proper cooling.

You can also find a Q6600 GO stepping and OC the heck out of it.

You might need to do a BIOS update on your motherboard before you insert the new CPU.

Actually I encourage you to check your motherboards site and see if you can get a newer BIOS and update it following instructions,,, So your motherboard can be compatible with the 45nm tech. gl

I'd agree to hold off for a new motherboard + RAM + CPU.

Socket 1155 is not that expensive if you don't OC. An i3 2100 + H61 Mobo + 4GB is just north of $200... around $65 for a mobo, around $25 for 4GB and around $120 for the CPU.

Overall, that CPU is around 40-50% faster than your E5700 and has HT, so will handle multithreaded loads much better.

If you compare this to getting a S775 quad like a Q8400, those are going on ebay for close to $140. Sounds better to have a quad, but Sandy Bridge is so much better in single threaded performance, that an i3 2100 is superior in almost every case:
http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/89?vs=289

Only in very well multithreaded applications can the Q8400 keep up. Q6600 is a similar case. Overclocking will get you closer to an i3 in low thread count apps and superior to an i3 in well multithreaded apps, but then you're buying better coolers, etc... too.

It's up to you, but I'd move to S1155.

I was in your situation a few months ago, and you are going to get raped $ wise for the relatively low gain you will get. A 775 Quad core is still good, but for the price you are asked to pay its not worth it. Save up the money for a Core I5k cpu, and for a new mobo and ram. It will be worth it, and you may end up spending twice what you wanted but the gain will be there.

Thanks for the help everyone.

I decided that I am just going to save up for a new Mobo, CPU and Ram.

This motherboard is also missing the I/O plate, and I don't feel like spending $20 for one.

Good posts,,, ya I doubt even that your motherboard would support a Qxxx chip. What chipset is your motherboard ? Also he will notice a huge differenec going from a dual core to a quad and OCed. YOu can grab a quad chip for 70 bucks off ebay and OC it and I guarantee it will keep you up and running for some time until you do a full upgrade,, mobo and ram and cpu,, vc psu ,, etc,, ,

The prices people pay for quad core 775 is absurd and I couldn't bring myself to do it for a used CPU.

I just upgrade my Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz to a Xeon 3110 (Core 2 Duo E8400) 3.0GHz for $70 shipped and that was pushing it.

I wanted a used Core 2 Quad QX9650 but for $225, when I can get a Core i7 760 for $199 new, it doesn't make any sense.

A core I5 today is often the same price or cheaper than most quad core 775 cpus, and it is muchhhhhh faster. Doesnt make sense ? Yep it doesnt. But people are making mad $$$ by reselling those old 775 quads. I wish I would have bought several 775 Quad cores back in 09 now, i would be making a hell of alot of money off of it. Anyone on Anandtech should know better though, the people buying quad core 775s are likely blind that they are wasting money.

overclocking to 4ghz would actually be a noticeable performance improvement. I would try that first. Those chips are cool so you should be able to hit 4ghz with little problem imo.might help you hold out till new comp.

I've seen G0 stepping q6600's go for ~$75 on the forums here which seems like a very reasonable price. Overclocked to ~3.4GHz like pretty much any of them can with a good motherboard and decent cooling is a lot of performance for the price. I'm thinking of grabbing one for my htpc(currently using a stock E6600 2.4GHz) for the headroom and to run any of my VM's I feel the need to push off on it. It's 65nm so it's not super efficient and doesn't oc quite as high as 45nm but still a great chip for $75-$100 which it often goes for used.
