No, you don't have a rare disease, you just lack self control.

what if lacking self control is a disease?

we can call it CDD (Control Defict Disorder)

then you can be diagnosed with CDD and people will be legally required to make 'reasonable accomodations' for your condition and not be allowed to discriminate against you

how do people get that fat seriously? I definitely don't eat well, I'm 41, so I don't have that awesome metabolism I carried into my early 30's, and I'm within a healthy weight range. I have no more six pack abs but at worst I could have a Leonardo Dad Bod. Do they really eat such copious amounts of food? Or is their metabolism so damn slow they can eat cheerios all day and be fat?

In some cases there are actually metabolic diseases which cause the body to not process shit properly. In all likelyhood they just rely too much on carbohydrate-based caloric sources and desserts.

https://xkcd.com/1793/

That goes a long way. My sister-in-law's husband's family has soda with every meal (breakfast included) and a bowl of ice cream is standard with lunch/dinner as dessert, and yes they're all enormous.

I dont drink soda. I drink coffee and water. I don't eat horribly either. I'll eat a fried egg or two for breakfast. I will have a turkey sandwich and a small amount of chips and some vegetables for lunch. I eat a sensible dinner, maybe 2 pieces of pizza or something, and have a sugary snack sometime throughout the day, maybe a snickers bar or something. I work out EVERY day at least 30-45 minutes of cardio and/or weight lifting. I am barely maintaining my weight -- maybe adding a pound or two every couple months. I crave sugar, even if I go without for a week or two, I still really enjoy it.

There are others who can eat double what I do and have soda throughout the day and are just naturally skinny. There's a lot to this metabolism thing. I'm always cold but have had my thyroid tested and its normal. I'm at 205 right now, but have always been heavy my entire life except for the past couple years. Still, even though I don't eat much and am what most would consider active, I can't lose weight.

In all seriousness, my GF was about the same as the latter there until she hit 31? 32? then it fell the fuck apart, now she eats like I do which is primarily protein and fat, and almost no sugars (few carbs if we can avoid them). With a solid workout regimen we're doing well, but it does take work (we're both rather sedentary in work and play). During the spring/summer we'll be outside a bit more hiking and whatnot so that helps too.

Try swapping your big meals and small meals, have larger meals at lunch (not carb heavy or you'll coma/crash by 2pm), smaller meals at dinner so you're just on the verge of hungry by the time it's bed time. Have a big breakfast if you need it (I usually have 2-3 pieces of bacon, 2 eggs, milk + coffee, no creamer/sugar). Tear out every carb you can afford to lose. Those two things (smaller dinners and less carbs) will be the biggest dietary change you can make to maintain weight/lose weight after dumping sugary drinks (including fruit juice!)

EDIT: Oh and never put yourself in a situation where you have to rely on a goddamn scooter to move from a to b, that's just so humiliating and makes things so much worse.

One time I was going to grab some mickey ds breakfast before work on a saturday morning. I go to make a left while this lady goes to make a right into micky ds. Well the line to the drive thru is all the way to the street so instead of pulling past an walking in she sits there in the middle of the road blocking the way in. I lost it, rolled down my window and started yelling you dumb fat bitch, pull your lazy ass in to the parking lot and walk your fat fuckin ass into the restaurant, jesus fucking christ. I was yelling it so loud every one in mcdonalds was staring at me when I finally walked in. I wouldn't even call that fat shaming just the truth.

That video is terrible. While I think most overweight (now the norm) should feel shame and work toward improving themselves, the male in that video is just plain offensive and hurtful.

It was pretty mean but since she catfished him my level of sympathy went down a notch.

I'd just call that being a moon-touched asshat. That or you need some anger management classes.

Good advice.

Because I don't like to take time in the morning, and I commute by bike so I don't want to bring a big lunch, I eat oatmeal for breakfast and a basic frozen burrito for lunch. Then I usually eat a bigger dinner of meat/fish/veggies/beans as early as I can. This works great for me when I want to drop weight, I think mostly because it's not high carb and my overall calorie intake stays reasonable.

I guess my point is that there is more than one way that will work but you need to figure it out and do it.

Fat shaming is awesome if it's balanced with a solid respect for people that make a strong effort to improve.

While sometimes the stick works better than the carrot (or something less starchy), generally it just creates a divide between people (see Black Mirror: Fifteen Million Merits for an obtuse example). The commutes help but if you really want to see something wild, go a month without eating anything with a carb or a starch. No rice/beans, no tortillas, no taters/starchy veggies. Just meat, greens, and dairy. Weight flies off! Hard to maintain, especially if significant other doesn't follow suit, but it can cause a pretty remarkable weight shift. But yeah as you said, different diet/exericise regimes work for different people, and the best one is the one you stick with.

I'm not going to say we need to go out of our way to fat shame everyone, but the way people are talking are trying to make it out to be illegal or something you should get fired for like racist statements.

It's ridiculous. You're fat. You eat too much. No, you don't have a rare disease, you just lack self control. The sooner you accept that the better off we will all be. Instead we are moving backwards in-time and are becoming "accepting" to being a fat lazy ass.

It's just a shame that handicap now means fatass. The last time I saw someone get out of a handicap parking spot that was ACTUALLY qualified for it was..... Oh, wait, never. I've never seen someone that is actually legitimately qualified to be using it. That's because people that should be using it have too much dignity to ever want to stoop to fat people's levels to get slightly closer parking. Fat people have no shame whatsoever in using that sticker. So now I just call it the fatass sticker.

Note: As a former fattie that used to weigh ~330 in my college days, I hold ZERO shame in calling people out.

I, too, am a former fatty and there's just no excuse for it. Stop eating so much and go fucking exercise. The algorithm is so simple and there's little to no wiggle room for failing at implementing it other than being lazy or stupid.

Fatties gonna fat.

That would annoy me just as much. I probably wouldn't have said anything, but not because I wouldn't want to.

It's simple but it's not easy.

True that. 2 pieces of thin crust pizza are around 400 calories per slice. I haven't a snickers in months, but will have some pickles or crackers or whatever. At any rate, I think I'm under 3k calories a day, but just can't lose the weight. I need to keep a food diary and really see what it is that's hurting me.

Trying to lose weight ... on 3000 calories a day? And you can't figure out what's wrong?

Not all calories are made equal, despite what others might tell you. I was on a keto/zero carb & starch/whatever hip name it has nowadays diet for a short time. Lost 25lbs in 4 weeks, another 5lbs in the two weeks after that (from around 220-230lbs total), and two belt loops with it. I was probably clearing 2500 calories while on it, and not exercising at all. Just lots and lots of greens, chicken, beef, pork, and dairy.

I can eat anywhere between 800-2k calories of any combination pizza/pasta/fruit/taters a day and will gain weight, every. single. time.

selling huge, calorie dense meals to fat people is profitable. Making shit food like pizza is cheap and profitable. These are facts, just like lack of portion control is the largest problem. When no portion is really good for you, your probability for success goes way down.
I got fat like this:
1) sedentary at night.
2) binge eating whatever
3) eating late
4) fast food. being on the go and grabbing a thousand calories of crap, then sitting in the car for an hour or more.
5) portion control
6) portion control
7)portion control
Aaaaand portion control
The strategy going forward is all about what I eat, and when. I have to make plans that take into consideration the 15 hour day that crops up now and then.

Because you obviously didn't read the post, I'll just leave this here. I said I'm under, well under for that matter, 3k.

An average man needs 2500 calories to maintain. I'm normally under that. 2 eggs and some coffee and creamer for breakfast are around 425 calories. Lunch is about 500-600, give or take, and supper around another 800-1k, sometimes less. I just don't burn calories at 42 like I used to.

And i work out daily, sometimes multiple times.

Yeah, due to that first part if I'm out for lunch or w/e I almost always (>90% of the time) target a meal I can split in half/thirds that I know will reheat well. Basically every place that sells food in america gives you two or three actual meals for like $12-$20, instead of half for half. Even lunch places where I am give you a burrito the size of a damned human baby, or 'soup and sandwich' consisting of half a loaf of bread full of chickpea laden meat and a 12-oz container of tomato bisque, along with 20oz of all-you-can-refill soda. You could send at least three grown adults from a third world nation into insulin shock from what is passed off as a 'meal' at most american eateries nowadays.

If I ate 2500 cals a day I'd gain ~15 pounds in no time.

I have zero idea what being "catfishes" is, but his response was uncalled for 100% of the time. That's not how our society should accept people to talk to others...period.

You said you "think" you're under 3000 calories. Which means that you don't know, and that you must not be tracking it very well.

It's pretty damned simple. If you're trying to lose weight, and you're getting some exercise, but you're _gaining_ weight, then you're consuming too many calories. Don't blame it on your age or some mysterious metabolism disorder. Whatever you're consuming daily (once you've actually figured it out), consume LESS.

Appears to be lying (specifically on facebook) pretending to be something/someone you aren't in order to further some motive. So basically a new word for like the last 20 years of the internet.

Disregarding what the guy said (cuz I don't have sound on my work computer) but I've never understood the concept of lying about something as obvious as physical form to someone you actually intend on meeting. I mean that seems like an obvious fail to me.

Not defending anything (as I have no knowledge of the guy's situation) but I really must object to the concept that 'gaining weight = eat less calories' cuz it's just not true from every real experience I've had in life. I'll definitely agree with you that not everything has to be a disorder, disease, or imbalance of whatever, but just eating less is not always enough.

1kcal of sugar water is going to do a lot different things to your body than 1kcal of chicken or collard greens. Cutting 250cal of sugar or starch-based carbs out of your diet is going to do a LOT more for you than skipping two pieces of bacon in the morning or having half a steak instead of a whole one.

Sure...that is shitty and I understand he is upset...but I'm still not ok with his response. I would be mortified if one of my sons ever treated someone like that regardless of what they had done.

On topic, people should feel ashamed for being overweight (with VERY few medical exceptions). In my opinion we should not as a society should not be encouraging fat people to feel victimized. It is definitely something they should feel pressure to change. Not only is it something that they have control over, but their unhealthy behavior is causing a drain on society. No one is calling for less "shaming" of cigarette smokers...why would we be different for overweight people?
