No. There are some fat people in the military who scrape by the PT tests. Believe me, as a military brat for 18 years and 5 years in college dealing with ROTC people I've seen some fatties who really need to start working out.

Yes, they should serve, but they need to lose some weight.

I was a physical training leader in the USAF shortly after they went from their old cycle ergometry test (what a joke), to their new test(still a joke). There are definitely some people that need to lose weight. When I was in, you could skate by for almost a year failing the PT test before they began procedures to separate you. Now, you could extend that longer if you could show you were making progress towards getting a passing PT score.

Just as I was separating, our new squadron commander basically told us at a Commander's Call that he thought that was BS and that if you'd been failing for that long, you'd be speaking with him directly very soon. Not sure it if followed through or not, I was out by that point.

Fatties survive in the military because everyone's too soft and afraid to do anything about it. At worst, they get put on remedial fitness training and are required to do certain extra PT things. It doesn't help that they're still allowed to cram whatever shit they want down their throats.

It's not a serious problem because fat people can still do their jobs (for the most part). They can usually pack with more gear and last longer. Most combat units will wash them out of their platoon/company if it's serious enough that it's combat effective.

Fat people that can't carry their own weight in combat roles outside the wire usually end up in other trades, doing jobs that require less physical activity, which encourages them to get even fatter.

PT tests are a joke and are built to push everyone through for numbers.

They fucking embarrass me, but it's not the end of the world.

There's gotta be a bunch of desk jobs or non-combats jobs that they could do easily. I think they should stay out of dangerous combat missions though, they would only endanger the lives of the men around them.

They wouldn't make it to a combat zone if they weren't fit to do it.

you have to be a certain weight and endure certain physical tests to be considered to enter the military. your thread is moot.

Depends on the branch of service and the job they'll be doing.

For the most part, a doctor, lawyer, or chaplain can be out of shape. Except for USMC. There, they don't give a shit if you're coming in to head straight to JAG - you're an officer first, and you'll be held to the same standards as everyone else.

If they can pass the fitness test they can serve. I see a lot of people judging someones ability by pictures. I have seen some fat people that outrun and perform physically better than some 'skinny' people.

There are lots of fatties in arms. If you're not flying jets or in combat arms I don't see a problem. I mean most good cooks are fat..and truck drivers what do you expect sitting 10 hrs a day?

The most goddamn retarded thing that I witnessed while in ROTC was my air force friends getting points deducted because they were deemed to be "too big" by the waist measurement. These guys were maxing the PT score without even breaking a sweat, but because of the Height/Weight measurements, their waists had to be under a certain size. They were muscular enough that they didn't meet the req'd measurement and got points off for it. Stupid Air Force.
