My favorite CPUs would be the ones that blew my mind when I upgraded to them:
Pent 100 -> Celeron 333
Celeron 333 -> Duron 600
(Duron 600 to Duron 800 to Duron 1000)
Duron 1000 -> AXP1800 @ 1.8ghz
AXP1800 -> AXP2500 @ 3200+
(AXP2500 to A643500)
A643500 -> C2D @2,8

The ones in parenthesis are the ones that didn't impress me as much.

AMD k6-2 350 my first build. It was challenge getting it work with via chipset

Intel Celeron 300A my first OC

Athlon 2500XP barton on a ABIT Nsf-7 v2. Great combo

Athlon64 4000+ Sandiego : rock solid, still running

Pentium 4 HT 3.0 GHZ : fastest cpu i have had that i regret selling.

last few build have just been average Intel fare.

Its not the same as it was in the past. The excitement of researching and gathering parts for a new build, slaving away to get the best out of the system.

I liked all the CPUs I've owned but if I had to choose, the few that stand out are:

Intel 386 - The best gaming machine, fast enough, never crashed, simple, tons of stuff to do on it, learned lots of DOS.
Athlon XP 2400+ - Very fast for its time and lasted me up until 4-5 months ago.
Intel C2D 2160 @ 3.0GHz - Best money I've ever paid for a processor with this level of power - extremely happy with it.

My favorite CPUs have to be all of my C2Ds/C2Qs. The price/performance is amazing, as is the ability to overclock.

My previous fave CPU would have to be my PII-300 SL2W8, which could easily be overclocked to 450Mhz. At the time, PII-450s were prohibitously expensive. I had one of the early 2X DVD-ROM drives too. It was great to watch DVDs on your PC, way back when. Now it's a standard feature, but it wasn't then.

my favorite processor was a Slot-A 650mhz I had. Still have just the processor removed the heatplate off it, has the 750mhz core on it. if i could find a cheap Slot-A combo I would get it just to tinker with, i miss it

My two favorite processors would have to be my Opteron 165. Dual core with 1MB of cache per core that ran at 2.7GHz... for a while that was pretty much as fast of a chip that money could buy regardless of what you were willing to spend. I thought it was pretty amazing to have that level of performance for under $150.

Also, my old socket A Duron 1.6GHz. That chip overclocked to ~2.05GHz without touching voltage and was rock solid. Pretty good for a ~$30 chip.

The worst chip I ever had was my socket A mobile Barton core 2500+. I got that chip shortly before the socket 754/939 A64's were launched, I should have waited but I just had to have that chip... one last hurrah for socket A that had treated me so well up to that point. I bought a shiney new DFI board just so I could overclock that chip to the 2.4-2.6GHz that everyone seemed to be getting out of them. Sad thing was that I just couldn't get that thing to overclock even 1% without having problems. I paid a premium for the mobile version as well. If I would have just waited I could have gotten an A64. Basically everything that could go wrong went wrong with that chip.

E4300...bought it when it was kinda expensive back in early '07, but the 1 Ghz o/c got it close to the X6800 that was retailing for, oh, ~$1K...heh

Barton 2500+ @ 3200+..keeps chugging away w/ the Shuttle board...great combo there.

I think you either mean 386DX-40 or 486 DX2-66. There was no 386DX-66, nor a 486DX-66.

Well spotted VirtualLarry. I think it was indeed a 486 DX2/66. Haven't you got anything better to do than memorise the listings of 20 yr old computer chips? (actually 19 years if you are going to be to be picky, which I'm sure you would...)

486SX25 - High school computer - did the job ok
Cyrix 133 - Starting college - major suckdom
Pentium 233 MMX - Midway through college - nice, lasted for like 5 years
Pentium III 733 - First build for me - super fast at the time, big jump up
Pentium 4 2.4C - Just awesome, whole different feel from P3s
A64 3200+ - Meh...didn't feel as fast as the 2.4C
X2 3800+ - Wow, there's something to this dual core stuff...
e6400 @ 3GHz - First time overclocking, holy crap this thing is fast!
e8400 @ stock - Why do I need to overclock again?

Personally, my favorite CPU's have all been AMD's

AMD K6-2 333mhz
AMD Athlon thunderbird 1.1ghz
AMD Athon 2500+
AMD Athlon 64 3500+ (still using it )

alas, it seems that mighty AMD has slipped the last few years. I'll probably still buy an AMD cpu (9950BE), but only really because I can get it so much cheaper than a q6600.

The worst I've used
pretty much any Pentium 4's
AMD K6-3 (not so much bad, as mediocre, especially for their price)
Later Pentium III's.

I wasn't crazy about the several P4s I owned.

I guess my Opteron 165 (since you could basically make it into an FX-57) was probably my favorite.

My E6400 is still going strong, and I like it a lot, although I'm itching for some 45nm love.

Tie between:

$50 Athlon XP 1600+ AGOIA

$60 Athlon XP 1700+ DLT3C JIUHB 0310UPMW

Those were the days.

AthlonXP 1700+ (1.46GHz) Tbred, that thing OCed like nobody's business. I think I got upto around 2.33 or 2.4GHz stable with it.

e6300 Conroe (1.86GHz) I have now at 2.8GHz. I think it's the memory or mobo holding me back, but this OC is just fine.

Oh yeah my first good PC was cool too: 166MMX Pentium, and the 3.0 Northwood C was a zippy chip too, although it didn't OC very well.

Duron 600 (spitfire core I believe) did 900MHz with ease.
Athlon XP 2100+ was a decent chip.
My current E6420 @ 3.2GHz is hands down the best, coolest running chip I've ever owned.

Worst Cyrix 133MHz didn't seem much faster then a 486

P4 2.8C - one of the northwoods with 24 caps instead of 12. Oc'ed well
Opteron 165 - had it up to 2.9 easy as pie. Loved it.
E6600 - 3.6 ghz at 1.38v?

Athlon XP-M 2400+ 1.8ghz @ 2.32ghz...awesome. Ran 24/7 for over 2+ years. Now retired.

My current E2180 2.0ghz @ 3.2ghz...60% overclock 24/7.
