I haven't done much thinking but off the top of my head here's what I've come up with:

1) Phantasy Star IV
2) FF3
3) Suikoden
4) KOTOR
5) FF7

I'm not sure if I want nastalgia or some new old stuff. What's your guys' favorite RPG's?

Oh yes. I was all set to put Secret of Mana near the top of my list and figured I'd get criticized for it. I have fond memories of playing this with 2 friends co-op after every school day for a month.

The main criticism I've heard is that the battle system is easily exploited by just issuing commands at an extremely fast rate, which was made easier by the way all magic commands were issued during a paused menu. I have to admit that I remember taking down quite a few of the end bosses using this method when I played.

Regardless, potential criticism wasn't the reason I didn't post a top five, let alone one with SoM. Laziness took care of that.

yea you could basicially infinitly stack them however you could only do a max of 9999 damage, which when you were high lvl was hit with 2-3 max rank spells , stacking more was just a waste of time

Secret of Evermore was a fun one from SNES, used the same system as SoM
Illusion of Giga was also a great game IIRC

Oh fine... in no particular order:

Secret of Mana (SNES)
Oblivion (I played it on PC, but to satisfy the console requirement it's on the 360 and PS3)
KoTOR (Another I played on the PC, but it's on the Xbox)
Earthbound / Mother 2 (SNES)
Suikoden (PS)

Mostly I'm a Bioware junky. I tend to get much more enjoyment out of non-linear PC-style RPGs like Baldur's Gate I/II as opposed to Final Fantasy-style RPGs, but that's just personal preference. Here's hoping Mass Effect joins this list soon.

I still have the Sec ret Of Mana cart I bought back in high school. Me and a friend played co-op for days, even through a massive thunderstorm. We refused to turn it off!
I sold my SNES system recently, and my SoM cart is for sale, priced high enough that nobody will buy it.
Emulation just isn't the same...

God I hate that game. I've started it twice and never gotten past the 2nd disc.

My memory is too bad to enjoy RPGs much anymore (too many names, places, etc. to remember), but my favorites are all of the standards (Final Fantasy 4 + 6 + 7, Xenogears, Dragon Quest 1-4, etc.)

Legend of Dragoon is, I think, my favorite console RPG. I loved the combat system and story. You can go play something else, joshsquall .

I loved TES III: Morrowind, but it is much better on PC than Xbox, so I didn't include it in my list. Also, Oblivion is only decent after heavy reconstructional surgery, so I didn't include it either.

I guess I should give FF6 another shot. Everyone seems to love it. I tried playing it right after Chrono Trigger and couldn't get into it, all the random battles started annoying me.

Earthbound
Secret of Mana
Suikoden <--- noone has mentioned yet??
FF1-7

I love RPGs, but its hard to play a console RPG after playing MMO's kinda. Probably had the most fun playing Suikoden and Earthbound. I have played through Earthbound at least 5 times, and it rules every time.
