Ugh too many to choose from. I didn't have a Genesis growing up so I didn't get to play all of the SF and PS games (though I am playing SF now - pretty good series :thumbsup

For now I'll say:

Final Fantasy VI
Final Fantasy IV
Chrono Trigger
Secret of Mana

Last pick is either FF7 or Xenogears - I can't decide they were both great!

Some other games that didn't quite make the cut:

DQVIII
Suikoden
Final Fantasy Tactics
Lunar

If you don't count HammerCurl (the OP!) or my own post, then no. No one has mentioned it.

God I hate that game. I've started it twice and never gotten past the 2nd disc.

My memory is too bad to enjoy RPGs much anymore (too many names, places, etc. to remember), but my favorites are all of the standards (Final Fantasy 4 + 6 + 7, Xenogears, Dragon Quest 1-4, etc.)

what did you hate about it just curious?

Battle system. I was horrible at it.

hahah so was i. but i did manage to beat the game.

it was ok. nothing amazing though.

That's pretty much my list, though in slightly different order.

Missed the title, did ya?

Actually, I'm really excited. I never had to chance to play Baldurs Gate, NWN, or Icewind Dale and all of those classics PC RPGs, however the Forgotten Realms Deluxe Edition came in today. Good timing, since I just RMA'd my 7800gt and am now running off of my intergrated video card.

If you like Shining Force, also try and find Warsong for Genesis and Dragon Force for Saturn. They were also teh awesomeness.

SECRET OF EVERMORE. jk jk. haha.

FF6. The game has both amazing gameplay and epic storyline, and is the holy grail for what RPGs can strive for.

INPO:

1) Earthbound
2) Chrono Trigger
3) FFVIII <~~~ Yes, I said EIGHT.. with VI, VII, X, XII all being pretty much equal, so I really can't decide between them.
4) Breath of Fire I/II
5) Oblivion

Again, INPO.. I really can't decide between them. However, if this were the "Best Game of All Time" thread, I'd have to give that to Earthbound. Pure genius.

No particular order:

Lunars (Sega CD ones)
Shining Forces inc. Shining the Holy Ark
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Blazing Hereos (Sega Saturn also known under the name Mystarria)
KOTRs

So many to choose from really its hard.

Honorable Mention for funniest RPG ever:

Albert's Oddessey for the Sega Saturn...when you get the choice to flip the bird to people and then watch characters tell "Your Mom" jokes its great.

How can anyone not mention Beyond the Beyond?! Absolute pinnacle of what an RPG should be!!!

K, stop typing the flame reply, I was kidding. In no particular order,

Chrono Trigger/Cross- RPG done right.

Xenogears-Only RPG I've ever played from front to back twice. Amazing end world music. Juke Box rocks.

Vagrant Story-Awesome but very complex battle system.

FF7/8-FF7 for gameplay but boo for sucky ending. FF8 boo for draw system but word that's how you should end a game!

Xenosaga series-I actually enjoyed playing through it.

And of course I'll probably think of something else and smack myself for not putting it down. Kinda like just now thinking of FFX and FFX-2.

Looks like you didn't grow up playing RPGs before the PS came around

Very true. Parents never purchased video game console I picked up the NES late in its lifecycle (While in college) but never really knew about RPGs until the PS came out. Xenogears/FF7 were my first foray into the RPG world.

Have played the earlier FF (Chrono Trigger as well) on the PS/PS2 retro mixes. Kefka definitely an interesting fella.

Panzer Dragoon Saga: My all time favorite RPG. Sci-fi and fantasy is blended perfectly to create an imaginative world. Creative enemies and mini-bosses. Excellent battle system. A key element of the story arc is borrowed from the movie "The Never Ending Story" if you're keen enough to catch it.

Phantasy Star 2: I have to mention this because it was way ahead of it's time. A bit too much grinding to advance by today's standard and a bit too difficult that a strategy guide is provided with the game. Long before Square made cut scenes, character deaths, and drama a staple in it's FF series, this game had all that. The ending is very poignant.

Final Fantasy 6: Not much to say that people don't already know. Squaresoft can count this as their crowning acheivement. Epic story line. Unique characters that made you care about each and everyone of them. Some of the best music in gaming.

Final Fantasy 4: This is the game that I felt Squaresoft really started to pick things up. It came at a time the SNES became a big contender to the Genesis and really showed it's superiority. Great music, graphics, characters, and plot. Although it is overshadowed by it's bigger brother FF6, it is still one of my favorite.

Final Fantasy X: This game is just beautiful and really showed what the PS2 can do. I love the grid system. The random battles seem to improve a lot from FF7 and FF8, because in this game it didn't feel like as much grinding and is more player friendly. I do hate the costumes, however. Auron and Seymour are great characters.

NOTE: Although I played FF7 and FF8, I could never get myself to finish them. For some reason I can't get into them. I have not even touched FF9, FFXI, or FFXII.

Panzer Dragoon Saga (Sega Saturn): Looks god awful now unfortunately. Too bad no Saturn emulator has any kind of smoothing filter for the textures like all the psx emus. I would an update to this but I think thats just a dream.

Earthbound (SNES): Just a brilliant rpg. Wonderful setting, characters..etc. If you don't have a SNES around please find the rom and play it on an emulator.

Phantasy Star (Sega Master System): Granted its not as good as its sequels but it was just amazing for its time. Visually blew every NES rpg out of the water and its a good game on its own. This was the first jrpg I've played and finished.

Crystalis (NES): More zelda style than tradional rpg but I had a ton of fun with this game.

Lunar: Eternal Blue (Sega CD): I also enjoyed the first one but this sequel improved just about every aspect of the original. Excellent game and while many hated all the changes Working Designs made to it I thought it was all good.

Honorable mentions:

Wonderboy/Monster World series (Master System, Genesis): Not a tradional rpg but just a fantastic adventure series. Give them a try!!

Pop'ful Mail (Sega CD): Again, not a traditional rpg but a great Wonderboy/Monster World style game with hilarious voiceovers.

Y's series (TurboDuo): Classic series that is still going on to this day on the pc and ps2.
