I'm such a nerd for that game...I know other RPGs have deeper and more intricate storylines, yadda yadda yadda...but there is something about the atmosphere of FF7...the environments, the music....I just found it very memorable and moving.

It was a complete package. Every element meshed with each other. Brilliance! Kinda sad it had to end though I'd love just keep roaming the world.

The font in Paper Mario makes my eyes bleed. It was the worst choice Nintendo could have made - a font WITH serif on a low-res screen. I have it on VC, though, so I'm sure I'll eventually get back to it and beat it, but it just hurts to read. Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door is a worthy contender to "one of the best RPGs". Super Mario RPG probably is, too, especially if it gets a VC release. Super Paper Mario... not so much.

I deliberately left FF7 off my list, but Crisis Core deserves strong kudos. IMHO, these lists would be better if we could specify favorite five per console.

4. FF12 (yes i just put FF12 in this list, i have to say after 5 hours of that battle system and learning how you can control all your people at the same time and do what you want, it something new for me (i refuse to pay monthly free games hint FF11))
5. Super Mario RPG ( a fun game in deed)

runners up (FF6 and FF10) I would add zelda in the list like others have but i do not consider them RPGs, more of an action game with RPG elements.

It's hard to make a list, but I'll base it on the games that I've dumped the most time in to playing just to have a standard of where they are.

1 - Earthbound. It's a wonder why with it hitting so many "Favorites" lists that Mother 3 hasn't been released in the US.
2 - Secret of Mana.
3 - Final Fantasy VII (tie)
3 - Final Fantasy X (tie)
5 - Final Fantasy IX

First Runner-Up: Xenogears. The only reason I've never replayed it is that weighing it at an 60-80 hours for a QUALITY play-through and no real fast way to streamline the game, it's a hard task to take on.

I'm gonna break the rules and add a PC game.

1) Diablo 2 (most addicting game I've ever played...)
2) Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
3) Final Fantasy 8 (not sure why everyone's so stuck on 7, I thought 8 was better).
4) Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past
5) Tales of Symphonia (thought it was surprisingly entertaining).

So yeah, that's my list.

*edit* ooooh, I totally forgot about Mario RPG. What a great game...That'd take my #5 spot.

1. Shining Force 3 .there were 3 installments and a bonus disc. This game made me buy for the first time a Japanese converter for a game system to get the last 2 installments
2. Lunar and Lunar Eternal Blue . from the Sega CD, I played the playstation remake of Lunar 1. it was good, but last boss is WAAAY too hard, and you can't exit the final dungeon to level up if you're too weak.
3. Suikoden 2 - playstation
4. Fire Emblem - 3 games for Gameboy advance. Best way to kill time on a long flight
5. Tear Ring Saga, playstation. Basically a rip off of Fire Emblem, but very well done. But harder than it should be, and I found it necessary to spend some time grinding

I have others that are classics in my mind, but would never consider replaying such as Phantasy Star 2 and Final Fantasy 2. But the above games are replayable

Some mentioned Vay for Sega CD, yes I played it through but don't remember it too well.

And for the guy who said people would give you flac for liking Phantasy Star 3... Yes. Yes, they should

Exactly!!! Ive played lots of rpgs but ff7 imo stands way out in front of them all. It had the whole package. Storyline was amazing also you got attached to the characters(aeris dieing). The materia system was awsome it added so much more to the gameplay. I was so disappointed when ff8 came out. The draw system was so boring and imo is the worst battling/magic system in ff since then. Im really hoping that FFXIII can deliver an experience close to ff7 but its looking like its another FFX style game.

Imo this the 2nd best ff ever(im gonna get flamed by the ff6 fans for this). Gameplay was so much fun and the music in the game was incredible. Also I couldnt believe how good of a story this game had considering that you could tell there main focus on the game was the battling system. This is one of those games that could of had a bad story yet still be a good game just off the gameplay alone. Another game like this that im surprised no one mentioned was Star ocean 2 second story for ps1. That game had a very unique and fast combat system that made it stand out from the rest of the other turn based rpgs that it was competing against at the time.

VANDAL HEARTS is an incredibly underrated strategy RPG for the PS1. I found it very addictive and more fun than FF Tactics. You strategy RPG fans should consider picking it up asap.
