Favorite All Time Text Editor?

Pros:
- Supports all character sets.
- Supports inline graphics.
- No batteries required.
- Works well in bright light, even sunlight.

Cons:
- No regular expression search.
- No search function of any kind!
- No autocomplete.
- No auto word wrapping.
- No spell check or grammar check function.
- Pen interface is slower than touch-typing.
- Default interface is monochrome only - colors must be purchased separately.
- Cut and paste is really slow, and requires scissors and glue!
- No backlight.
- Saving backups requires a copy machine.
- No social media sharing functions.

You forgot a couple:

-No context-sensitive markup
-Only one file-format supported

Oh and who has a compiler that accepts Letter/Legal input?

Funny how it's been so long I forgot the name.

More impressive was when we got real spreadsheet programs. I can't remember the name of the one I worked with in high school but it just had a blank screen and you had to do all kinds of idiotic things like put carrot symbols to make it work.

Notepad?

I use a compact notepad replacement, Metapad. Very customizable, can open recent documents, you can quickly configure it to be "Always on top" of other applications (not get minimized when you click out of it). This makes it very handy for jotting things down from other apps for whatever.

UltraEdit. I like it much better than Notepad++
Paired with UltraCompare is even better.

My favorite all time is probably Xcoral, but I honestly don't use it much anymore. These days my current favorite is Notepad++ because I generally live in the Windows world.

I currently use Notepad++ for editing PHP code, etc. I mostly use Notepad. UltraEdit looks neat.

I recently switched over to Notepad++. I use FTPS for everything and NppFTP has some annoyances working with multiple ftp profiles at the same time. Been working on fixes to it in github and now need to put in a pull request.

I previously used PSPad and that has pretty good integrated FTP too.

Before that I used Crimson Editor (RIP you good dog).

Before even that, I used Arachnophilia. Back in 2001. That's one's still around and getting updates... but it's mainly for editing HTML documents.

No question about it.

on the very unusual event during which i use linux....i do use vim. because i can usually remember how to edit a line to comment/uncommet, and save a document.


but for windows im another vote for notepad++
it is ridiculously handy.

Wow - that brought up memories!

Funny how I never knew then that it was a really painful text editor since it was the only one available in my early days with a PC, but after edlin, every editor seemed to be bliss. And today's editors, Notepad++ et al, are ridiculously over-powered.

Btw, anybody used Notetab? Was my first editor to move away from Notepad, and it used to be fully free and awesome. I see that the free version is real lite, but the full version is still well loved.

Like I said above, sometimes edlin was the only way. Also, edlin allowed one to tweak binaries; edlin didn't care if the characters were really characters or not.

Many a school book report of mine was written with MacWrite. It was a great word processor for its time.

I've been using OpenOffice for years. Wrote a lot of term papers with it. I really don't get the hate for it. Then again, I've never been a huge fan of Word.
