It was simply a game where unbalanced shit happened.

The party tank got the grapple skill and some other weird skill that I forget. Basically no monster could get past him and basically he was the perfect tank and any monsters from the front could not do anything at all because their attacks would be ignored by the dual shield wielding tank.

However, at the same time the Gm got some lucky as all hell hits on our squishies which took us down to an insanely low life pool. When we got to the end, we realized the boss who could not regenerate could be killed by the spirit wolf slowly which does 2 damage a turn ignoring armor, while we stayed back and watched.

So much rage on both sides.

Yeah I noticed if you pick certain characters and they get lucky with perfect skill & gold item combinations they can be real game breakers. Worst part is the way the game is played you can easily get those special gold items before starting your second level.

The one and only time I played this game, I was Japan, and I was completely massacred during the raid on Pearl Harbor, the U.S. fleet survived...

*sigh*

One of the last games I ever played I was Japan as well, and my teamates and I decided to pull a 180 and ignore the Pacific fleet completely (it might have been the beer strategizing at that point).

The allies were completely surprised and had no idea how to play it: we massacred them lol.

Ticket to Ride & Carcassonne are fun. My wife has really gotten into Dominion too. Although that's more of a card game than "board". The Euro style strategy games are a breath of fresh air from the old stagnant Milton Bradley stuff that I grew up with.

Ticket to Ride is a great introduction into "good" board games.

I'm trying to debate what board game to get for x-mas for someone that just turned 30. She likes games like Clue and Monopoly from back in the day but, was wondering if there's something that's newer and fun. I was thinking of getting Candyland but, I don't remember it too much.

What was your favorite?

It's not a board game, but Munchkin is great for small groups.

Yeah. I had some pretty cool games like Hero Quest. I also just remember the other day that I had a set of Battle Masters. Holy Shit was that an epic board game for a kid. Problem was finding people to play the games with.

I played both of these for the first time within the past month. They were both fun, and I'd recommend either (it helps that I won both my first time playing them). I just think it's odd that you managed to name the two board games I've played recently given that I never play board games...

Super Scrabble is pretty awesome. It's like Scrabble, but way superer. Apples to Apples can be good but you need to play it with the right group of people (sarcastic, jaded, bitter bastards who go out of their way to try to offend people seems to offer the best time). Playing it with a mixed group tends to make it a fairly ho-hum experience.

Also, fuck Risk. The last time someone suggested we play Risk, I punched him dead in the face. That's not a joke; I literally punched someone in the face for suggesting we play Risk. I hate that goddamn game. The best way to play it is to declare war between two territories that you control and take yourself out so you can go do something more entertaining like elective surgery or waxing your taint. That game blows ass.

From teh games she likes, I would take a stab and say she'll enjoy Acquire and Catan.

Heh. I recently got into Dominion in the last 2 or 3 months. Every single time we bring in someone new they always win as well. I think it's a case of "ignorance is bliss" and you don't overthink the game. Too many times I watch people get caught up into strategies and overstack their deck with action cards that work together...only to never have them fall in the right order. While a n00b is there just slowly building up silver and gold cards and is able to buy a Dutchy or Province every other hand.

Oh...and absolutely agree on Apples to Apples. You need similar midsets playing. If you have a mismash of boring, easily offended people playing with some uncouth, perverse bastards it's no fun. But a game of perverse, uncouth bastards trying to outdo each other is a hoot.
