We have a Shepard too and I think labs are more intelligent plus Shepard's arnt good for much but man stopping and only if trained well. Most of the time people get one, don't give it enough exercise, don't train it and it ends up biting someone. Also they have a genetic hip problem sometimes. For a most people Labs would serve them better plus they bark better like at anything all the time a car coming from a mile away perceptive.

Well, according to all tests of the breeds Shepherds are smarter than Labs. Of course there is some variance from individual dog to individual dog (you could have a sub-par Shepherd on the intelligence scale), but overall GSD's are smarter.

They are also considered one of the most versatile dogs. I don't know why you think they aren't much good for anything but "man stopping". They are good at tracking, drug sniffing, bomb sniffing, rescue, endurance, herding, protection, guard, guide dogs, therapy dogs, disabled assistance dogs, and any number of other activities.

The genetic hip problems come mostly from American Show Shepherds, which is why I got a working line. Get a German German Shepherd, or an American Working Shepherd, and you are not so likely to have hip problems.

I will agree that Labs are better for most people though. Labs generally are easy to train because of an amiable personality, and they are reasonably intelligent. Good with people and other animals on a whole. German Shepherds are not "starter dogs". While they have a lot of intelligence they also have a lot of drive so if you don't know how to train and focus this drive, this develops into boredom which leads to many other problems (anxiety, aggression, etc.).

Now Labs are my second favorite dogs, don't get me wrong. Just your post has a lot of misinformation about GSD's, IMO.

Man you're one bad mofo. Killing deer 100 yards away with a high powered rifle takes a bad ass. LMK when you kill a grizzly bear with a hunting knife.

I don't deer hunt (anymore) I feel bad. Birds and fish only.

Are you kidding me? They require 300% more time spent training than other dogs, but they aren't stupid.
Now Goldens, stupid yet instinctively clever. Perfect for kids and young families though.
You complain about someone calling Labradors stupid but then go on to call Golden Retrievers stupid, a breed of dog considered more intelligent than Labs. Gotta love the ironing.

Yeah what of it? I've killed over 40,000 animals in my lifetime between hunting and fishing. I will not have a liability who is killing my other animals. Nor will I give a liability to someone else. Like a man I deal with it no matter how gut wrenching it was.

You're just an E-badass aren't you?

Seriously, I can't believe no one else has called you out on this. This has to be the tool post of the day.

First you brag about shooting a dog in the head - fail
Then you say 'what of it' - fail.
Let's not forget now, you appear to be an animal expert, so I don't know why the fuck you couldn't train the dog you shot in the head - fail.

Now you say you have killed over 40,000 animals. Really? Not 30k? Not 50k? Do you have a tally sheet or something? How the hell would you even know something like that. Now let's assume you've been killing shit for 20 years (are you that old?) You've killed roughly 5 animals a day, for 20 straight years? Even holidays? Smashing ants doesn't count.

I call complete BULLSHIT.

Whatever though, you're an e-badass. Oh... and you don't know jack shit about dogs.

of all the large/small dogs I've owned the Chihuahua is by far the best. All the sensitivity and awareness of a good watch dog with none of the large dog litigation hazard.

Large dog litigation hazard? I'd worry more about a chihuahua biting someone (or a small dog in general) than most big dogs.

My favorite breeds that I have had experience with are:
Shih Tzu
Westie
Golden Retriever
Corgi

Tiiiibiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeees.

*snorgle* *snorgle* *snorgle*

EDIT: Although tbh I've never even seen one in real-life, but in pictures they're always soooo cuuuute.

I've had significant personal experience with a cocker spaniel, pug, and a long-coated-black-retriever-thing-that-I-forget-the-breed-name-of. The cocker and retriever were extremely friendly and fun dogs, while the pug with a vicious (yet very clever and one-of-a-kind) son of a bitch. I'd probably pick the retriever overall.

EDIT #2: A flat-coated retriever, I believe it to be.

That's because labs are usually stupid and aggressive. Shepards are usually smart and sociable (if they get sufficient exercise). Shepards bond strongly with their person, labs wake up to a new world every five minutes.

Goldens are great with kids. I wouldn't trust a white, yellow, or chocolate lab anywhere near children.

Clearly that's why they're so commonly used as service dogs, they are aggressive and stupid.

My favorite was my wolf, but I'd never have another, as it was a serious contest of wills. If I was going to get a new dog right now I'd get an Airedale. Lots of fun, very friendly, and very tough.

That's really hard to narrow down...I'll give you my top 5:

- Beagle
- Golden Retriever
- Corgi
- German Shepherd
- Weimaraner

I've heard really good things about Rhodesian Ridgebacks...and will likely get that as our next dog to give it a try. My wife loves Golden Retrievers and I do have a soft spot for them. Currently we have a Beagle and a Beagle/Golden Retriever mix that we found at a shelter.

Our labs are outside dogs to the hair problem. Plus the fact they go in and out of the pool and pond all day and get that wet dog smell. But labs are #1 in so far as hunting dogs. They can't point the best like a pointer who are mentally retarded, They can't flush the best like Spaniels. But they are top 10 in both categorizes and obviously the best retrievers and very very intelligent. Even over a slushy frozen pond they will go get a duck. No other dog will do this. No other dog learns the hunting as well either. I had my trained before their first birthday. All it takes is time every day for about 6 months and you'll have a serious asset on your hands. Love the labs. Plus they probably have never bit anyone in the history of man. Very good with children.

Pretty much crap since I have seen quite a few Brittanys do everything you mentioned. While not as big many have gone up against Labs in the field and in trials and won.

the best dogs ever are great danes. they beat all the other dogs mentioned so far. the only other dog that's close is the english mastiff, and that's probably because great danes are half english mastiff.
