We have a Shepard too and I think labs are more intelligent plus Shepard's arnt good for much but man stopping and only if trained well. Most of the time people get one, don't give it enough exercise, don't train it and it ends up biting someone. Also they have a genetic hip problem sometimes. For a most people Labs would serve them better plus they bark better like at anything all the time a car coming from a mile away perceptive.
Well, according to all tests of the breeds Shepherds are smarter than Labs. Of course there is some variance from individual dog to individual dog (you could have a sub-par Shepherd on the intelligence scale), but overall GSD's are smarter.
They are also considered one of the most versatile dogs. I don't know why you think they aren't much good for anything but "man stopping". They are good at tracking, drug sniffing, bomb sniffing, rescue, endurance, herding, protection, guard, guide dogs, therapy dogs, disabled assistance dogs, and any number of other activities.
The genetic hip problems come mostly from American Show Shepherds, which is why I got a working line. Get a German German Shepherd, or an American Working Shepherd, and you are not so likely to have hip problems.
I will agree that Labs are better for most people though. Labs generally are easy to train because of an amiable personality, and they are reasonably intelligent. Good with people and other animals on a whole. German Shepherds are not "starter dogs". While they have a lot of intelligence they also have a lot of drive so if you don't know how to train and focus this drive, this develops into boredom which leads to many other problems (anxiety, aggression, etc.).
Now Labs are my second favorite dogs, don't get me wrong. Just your post has a lot of misinformation about GSD's, IMO.
