They'd still be lousy livestock guard dogs; they don't have the interest for it and would be unlikely to stick with and protect a herd.

They're people-protective only in situations where they perceive a direct attack. If you're not home and someone breaks into your house they will likely greet the stranger happily. Yes, they'll attack an attacker (my female Dane used to get between me and my little sisters when I was tickling them and growl at me while wagging her tail to tell me she wasn't cool with this) but they're definitely nowhere near on the level of alertness or guarding of a lab. I consider it one of the breed attributes.

untrue. if anyone even parks at the door, our dane instinctively runs to the door and barks her head off, which is part of their breeding as guard dogs (not to bark unless it's to alert the owners). just their sheer size is a deterrent.

they're not as good a guard dog as a cane corso (the other dog we used to have). he was the best guard dog. i didn't know much about his breed until we brought him home from the pound and i looked it up. we didn't get too many people to come to our door because of him. people were afraid of him, even though he was the most gentle, loving dog ever.

our great dane and cane corso playing:

our cane corso (we ended up having to get rid of him because, after over a year, he still couldn't stop chewing on my gf's things... we think it was anxiety from being in the pound):

Size difference? You love size difference? You'll love this one!

(forgive the lack of molding on the doorway - I was in the middle of remodeling)

Haha, love that pic. He (or she?) looks like he's smiling. Even he thinks the size difference is humorous

The other dog looks like he's pouting.

I don't have many good pictures of my old dog that are digital. But here's him and the new dog. They're both kerry blue terriers. The older one was the best dog of all time, Moonlight. The new one, Kirby (clearly I don't do the naming) is a pussy. They don't shed, so that's cool. But man, I don't think I even care what breed I get from now on. I'm gonna get something that doesn't shed again, but for sure I'm gonna get one that is big for it's breed. They're supposed to be in the 30's I think. Kirby is 31 pounds, Moonlight was 60. Moonlight was awesome, and Kirby is a little pissant piece of shit in comparison. Dog really annoys me sometimes. I yelled at Moonlight when he was a puppy when he barked for a stupid reason. He never barked after age 1 except at dry ice. No idea, maybe it makes a weird noise or something.

Our groomer kept cutting Moonlight like a shnauser so he looks stupid in this pic. Also, he had fairly advanced cancer and we killed him soon after. Kirby was a total douche bag to Moonlight, I'll probably never get over that. Little... asshole.

American Eskimo (had one during my teen years)
Lab
Border Collie
Great Pyranese (Always was a huge belle and sebastian cartoon fan as a kid. When I have a big enough property I will have a great pyr someday)

My current dog, Mystie, is likely a black lab / border collie mix. Although there's no real way to know for sure. She came from a gassing shelter in NC. I love her so much.

Azumanga! Have to watch that again, it's been too long!

Didn't know there was a anime about a great pyr. I'll have to rent that Wondered what that cute image was from.

Another cartoon great pyr is Belle. Nikelodeon played the Belle and Sebastian cartoon series back in the 80s. Love Belle. <3

Chocolate labs - I think they are a pretty color and as a kid I played with one and fell inlove with em ever since.

or Rottwieler, although they can play a bit rough, they are also very loyal and loving and grateful.

Collies, by far, and not the smaller border collies, I'm talking about real Collies, like Lassie. My Dad grew up with collies, I grew up with collies, and now my kids are growing up with collies. They're great family dogs, very protective of the kids and also very gentle. My 1 year old climbs all over our collie and the dog doesn't even flinch.

They're not all hyper and crazy like other herding dogs either, after their first year they're pretty calm. They're also incredibly loyal, my dog follows me everywhere. Every time I go upstairs to take a shit or take a shower, I come out of the bathroom and my dog is laying on the bed waiting for me. If it wasn't for my wife objecting to having more than 2 dogs, I'd probably have about 6 or 7 collies. I want one of each kind, short hair (smooth) and long hair (rough), as well as all the different colors (sable, tri-color, blue merle, etc..).

I'm a dog person.

No other Australian Shepherd lovers here?
Super smart
loyal to their family
loves to play
good with kids
no tail - they do the butt-wiggle instead

Well, I guess I'm the only other fan. Having been around many different breeds and my gf having owned everything imaginable, it's become our favorite. Some other qualities that I like are:

Size - ~45lbs which still makes it acceptable to partially lay on you without crushing, but big enough to do things like larger 100lb dogs.

Coat - Doesn't require washing except once a month, coarser hair that is easy to remove from clothes, but soft enough to the touch and can be comfortable in cold weather.

Training - Pretty much the same intelligence as a boarder collie so even a lazy owner/trainer can get the dog to obey without much work. Plus you can tell from how they watch you that they are awaiting your next command.

Energy - Has a ton of energy. I've seen her play for 4-5 hours straight with another dog, take a quick nap, and then play fetch again for an hour, and finally run up and down the stairs 30 times before bed. On the other hand, she can go from a full on running around the back year playing fetch to sleeping with you on the couch while watching tv.

I understand that people lean towards dogs they had growing up or dogs they had some sort of prior experience with.

But if you had no prior opinions, how would you pick?

No Shedding/Low allergy?
Above-Average Intelligence?
Good with people and pets?
Quiet, yet a good guard dog?
Moderate Excerciser (not hyper, but not a couch potato?)
Easily trained?
Small/Medium/Large?

So I guess I don't understand why Schnauzers aren't more popular. At the dog park I go to, they are always friendly, social, and quiet. The come in one of three sizes. And best of all, they don't shed at all. I hate going to people's houses or riding in someone else's car and getting loads of dog hair over me. So no shedding was a top priority. Our standard can go into bed, climb on all of our furniture and you would not even know we had a dog in our house because there is no trace of dog hair left behind.

I don't actually like owning really smart dogs. They take more training and are more willful and are overall more effort and energy.

I prefer a couch potato dog.

I don't know about larger schnauzer breeds but a mini schnauzer is the only dog that's ever bit me. They're territorial and slightly neurotic and very nervous around strangers, also not very dog-friendly.

I've considered harvesting my dogs undercoat and selling corgi down pillows/blankets

The best ideal dog to have would be a mid sized dog around 100-150 pounds of the working breeds...commonly known as the American bandogge (Basically a mixture of your choosing) but a standard of atleast --one mastiff breed x one bull breed-- attributing size an power mixed with stamina and gameness, as its second genoration bred with mixing in multiple breeds of various working lines of different Jobs hunters; swimmers; live-stock guardians ect ect... that can cover an aray of task while remaining idle in temperment at the same time surpassing all catagories of all attributes such as the classes I named above, a bandogge should cover every different type of dogs task while being well balanced in a standard temperment, some call it designer dogs, some call it the perfect dog....not too big, not too small, not too agressive, yet still can takle big game like wolves, buck an mid sized bears an defend himself and your property from a burglar, yet be gentle to nanny and baby sit the kids..some like em short hair'd like the pitbull, some like em shaggy like the Kangal...a bandogge will depend on the breeder an the blood lines you select.

Necromancers will be shot on sight
