Favorite classical music?

I just think some classical music rocks balls, here's two of my favorite cd's:

Mozart's Requiem (Wiener Philharmoniker, Herbert von Karajan - label: Deutsche Grammophon)

Bach: Toccata & Fugue, Passacaglia & Fugue, Pastorale, Predludes and Fugues (Edward Power Biggs on organ, label: Sony's Essential Classics)

what is/are yours? please include label and more info, it's a mess finding classical music with all the recordings that are being made

I definitely agree with you on the Karajan/DG recording of Mozart's requiem. That is an EXCELLENT cd. Here are some of my other favorites:

Tchaikovsky/Brahms Violin Concerti (Nathan Milstein violin, EMI/Seraphim)

In the order of my preference:

1. 5th Movement, Beethovan's Ninth, von Karajan.
2. Dvorak, B Minor Cello Concerto, Rostropovich or Yo Yo Ma.
3. Mozart, Eine Kleine Nachtmusic, Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, George Szell conducting.
4. Bach Cello Suites, Casals, Rostropovich, or Yo Yo Ma.
5. Mozart, Four Horn Concerto, Brain, von Karajan.

One of my favorite, and probably apochryphal, stories about Casals is his response to a question about why he practiced 4 hours a day at age 90: "I'm still trying to get better."

If I had to make the impossible decision of what one piece of classical music would you choose if that one piece was the only one you would ever be able to hear again, it would be Beethoven's seventh. By the way, that was Beethoven's own choice among his compositions.
I love opera and the choice would be even harder there; probably Mozart's Don Giovanni. In my short list are some you probably haven't heard of. Charles Gounod's Mirelli is a masterpiece, much more so than his Faust. It has the most melodic style of any opera I have ever heard. Smetana's Dalibor is almost unknown in the Western world, but is a magnificent heroic composition that ranks with the best of Wagner or Verdi.
chess9 is right that the Bach suites for unaccompanied cello can make anyone's hackles stand up on the nape of their neck. Handel may have said that God, guided his hand in composing the Messiah, but it is equally true for these suites.

I can listen to Mozart's Die Zauberflöte (The Magic Flute) over and over again, and it never fails to fill me with joy and delight. Almost all the orchestral works of Jean Sibelius touch me deeply. I used to be very moved by Gustav Mahler, but now I find too much heartbreak there.

I also like most baroque, particularly Bach, Vivaldi, Haendel & Haydn. Mozart leaves me cold, I find in it much technique but little emotion (except the Requiem). I also like Rossini's ouvertures, the Strausses, Tchaikovsky and Moussorgski.

In general, I will more probably like a piece if there is no damn piano in it. While it might sound contradictory, I love harpsichord and church organ.


I own about a dozen recordings of The Four Seasons and my favourite by far, because of its joy and energy, is that of excerpts by the Deutsche Bachsolisten on Vivaldi And Baroque Masterpieces, Cambra Sound, London, CR 095, 1978 & 1983. Violins and altos (violas) never sounded better.

For cello, Ofra Harnoy rules.

Edit: Big OOOPS! My apologies. I just looked at my copy of the Berlin Philharmonic and von Karajan. Ode to Joy is a separate and 5th movement. Boy is my memory getting bad. Ugh.

I just learned this one on piano ... really really fun to play, and quite a lot of "leaps of faith" from quick changes

I'm a fan of polyphonic choral music and early music in general.

Arvo Pärt's choral music is a favorite. You can feel the cold of the Estonian winter in every note.

Hildegard von Bingen's music as performed by the Anonymous 4 and Sequentia is also a favorite. Sequentia also has a series of albums covering medieval northern European music that is very good.

Voices of Light by Richard Einhorn is very good.
