The two are not even comparable. Music add to the atmosphere of the movie, it the games its just static music that does not add nothing to the gameplay.

In movies the budget the soundtrack with the movie for this very purpose, in games its just something they put in because.

Ive yet to play a game that needed music for effect. Some games have neat music, but i bet majority disable it after a bit.

You're a headcase.

Music is just as important to games as it is to movies. It establishes the atmosphere and mood of a game. I never turn the music off in games, even when the soundtrack is lackluster.

As for the idea that music adds nothing to the gameplay, I disagree. Take Legend of Zelda. A good Legend of Zelda game has each dungeon feel distinct from each other. The music adds to this distinctiveness. From the creepy vibe of the Forest Temple...

To the grandeur and mysticism of the Spirit Temple.

Music also adds to story-driven and character-focused games. Take Chrono Trigger, for instance. There are individual themes for the characters, which help make the characters feel more distinct and memorable. Who could forget Frog's theme?

Or the Magus' theme?

In games with more twitch-based action, the music is key in getting the heart racing and really driving home the point that a fight is important and you need to do your best, like in Mass Effect.

Music in a game can also be critical in establishing a epic sense of drama and finality at the end of a game. Take Sovngarde from Skyrim.

Anyways, my favorite game soundtracks off the top of my head in no particular order are:

Legend of Zelda series
Mass Effect series
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy series
The Elder Scrolls V Skyrim
Fire Emblem Awakening
Deus Ex Human Revolution

Each of these games would be lesser if they did not have soundtracks.

I only played one of those, Skyrim. I never felt the music, from the link, was part of the game.

Music in games is like someone singing while you are trying to concentrate. Just background noise. Immersion in games come from the gameplay, not the music.

Theres a few I like however for the most part if it's an FPS, I typically turn music off so I can hear the natural ambience for a more realistic experience.
Most of the game music I prefer is old music like Amiga.

I disagree with how you're separating music from gameplay to begin with. Good game music essentially becomes part of the gameplay and compliments the gameplay. A game without music is a game without good mood, atmosphere, and tone.

Out of curiosity, what games do you play, anyways?

If there is a belief that music can be separated from gameplay with zero consequence or affect, play some different games.

Braid is my go-to example for this sort of argument. Limbo could work as well, or any survival game.

Music done poorly is obviously painful. Music done well enhances the game. Some genres are affected more by music than others, while some others simply are not. Blanket statements on the matter display ignorance.

I still love the MIDI music from Everquest, it could really set the tone and mood.

Oh yea - fond; fond memories

after awhile; I'd import my own mp3s to play while playing......after I got bored with that......back to the old soundtrack for EQ.

music very much sets the tones for each game; specially mmos and rpgs; fps not so much.......but they can.

Those that say they doesn't; or its not part of the immersion; imho you are truly missing out.

Deus Ex; Deus Ex human revolution; system shock; system shock 2...EQ; UO balder's gate, planescape torment. Any Final Fantasy game......the music is a massive part of pulling you into the game play.

Same with ShadowRun........and now with ShadowRun and ShadowRun: Dragonfall.......music is a massive part of immersion to make you actually feel you're there chummer.....

FPS, pretty much any online game play.

Ah, well then that makes sense.

For games that try and create more atmosphere or are more story-driven, a good soundtrack immeasurably adds to the effect.

I can see how in most cases it would just be a distraction on online FPS, without a doubt.

No mention of Quake? Man, i used to crack a few beers and play Quake with the music as loud as my little Creative Labs speakers would let. Can't go wrong with Trent Reznor and a nail gun.

FFXI, Xenogears, Valkyrie Profile, Bastion/Transistor. God I've listened to so much FFXI music lol.

Honorable mention to Mass Effect. I don't think the music on it's own is particularly great (though still enjoyable) - but I think the series had a real knack for making the score match/compliment the scene especially well.
