I dont understand how people can vote for Unforgiven. Such a weak song IMO. The only thing i can guess it was played on the radio and MTV a lot and that is all you know of Metallica. I think there are 2 sets of fans. Pre-Black album fans (myself) and people who like the Black album and onward.

I can tolerate the Black album but i think that is when they started sucking overall. I dont really listen to Metallica much anymore though at all.

For me - Metallica died when they released the black album.

Master of Puppets! I would say Justice For All as overall favourite album though as i feel they went downhill after that.

Although i do have an urge for some And Justice right now....

Many people probably started hating Metallica after Lars started with his Napster tirades....I am with Lars on this one but there are many posters here who make excuses about being entitled to free music from artists because of the RIAA...

Really?

I would have sworn it was when Metallica abandoned their roots and went more mainstream.

While the business person in me completely understands the fiscal reasoning behind such a move, the fan in me iz disapoint. Therefore the Black album was the last Metallica product I purchased.

QFT...Metallica became a vehicle to hate for that.

Personally, they were right. Metallica is one of of the few "bands" allowed to do more or less what they want. Today's industry is "here is the next [cookie cutter]...let's call [cookie cutter] to write a few songs and let's call [cookie cutter] to lay down the music."

The artists are really screwed today on their distribution...fuck as a DJ you can't even play a band that fits your format anymore unless they are signed under one of your parent companies labels (ala CLEAR CHANNEL).

Then you have the same people thinking music should be free pissing on artists desires to life a nice life under the "all they do is get to play all day and that should be free too" mindset.

For every band that makes it, there are 1000's eating ramen or worse every night that are just as talented or better.

For Whom the Bell Tolls!

Surprised no one else has nodded this awesome track inspired by an amazing book.

that whole album is epic. its by far my overall fave collection of metallica songs. kill em all is 2nd. black was the last one i enjoyed. its also the last one i bought. while i dont consider unforgiven a very good song technically (i actually get bored about halfway through the song usually), i can recognize why some people like it a lot. its pretty emotion driven, and the music will bring people into it very easily.

i still cant settle on one song to define as my fave. its a toss up between fade to black, jump into the fire, bell tolls, whiplash, creeping death or wolf and man. i cant decide.

This is how i saw it as well. Never even knew about the napster stuff till now. So for me it was because they went mainsteam and sold out.

Black is chock full of awesome hits.
Black is the album that brought them into mainstream.
It happens all the time with bands. Old fans like to distance themselves from "newbs".

You are not cool because you knew who they were before they were popular.
I am not saying you have to like their new stuff, but I think you should try to appreciate their new music before you instantly call it crap.
Get over yourself.

I thought St.Anger was crap, but after listening to it about 10 times, I really like it.
I have done that with most of my favorite bands.

1. They release a new album
2. I hear it and am pissed that it doesn't sound exactly like their old albums
3. I force myself to listen to it a few times
4. I love it

i didnt stop listening to them because they went mainstream, i still listen to them regularly. all their stuff. i just like their older stuff better than newer. black was less intense to me, and ajfa was what i considered their commercial mainstream break album.

/agreed

I must admit, though - I used to fantasize about 'And Justice..' being remixed and re~engineered so the songs had the same depth/crunch/impact the Black album has.

Isnt that what i just said? I said i stopped liking them when they went mainstream and sold out. That sounds exactly like what you just said.

They were better before they went mainstream because they made the kind of music they wanted to. Not what some big corporation thought would sell more albums.

That's a common complaint about the album.

Wikipedia:
The album is also noted for its nearly-inaudible bass guitar (Newsted was quoted as saying "The Justice album wasn't something that really felt good for me, because you really can't hear the bass")[10] and dry, sterile production, and therefore has been called a "slightly flawed masterpiece and the pinnacle of Metallica's progressive years" by Allmusic.com.[4]
