I'm building an AMD rig and was wondering if the OC'ing programs were different between AMD & Nvidia cards? This is the first time I've gone Nvidia (MSI GTX 650 Ti PE/OC) and I used Sapphire Trixx and Furmark with my Radeon, is it different with Nvidia?

Furmark is pretty brutal. I found Kombustor to be a good test without as much risk of frying something, but that's just my opinion. I'm probably not the best one to ask, hopefully you will get better answers, but Sunday is a slow day here. Come back tomorrow, lol.

I always prefer to use games to test stability. Crysis 3 is a pretty good one if you have it. Furmark and the like can be helpful, but they use your GPU in a much different way than games do. It's not uncommon to find a stable overclock in Furmark that will crash games. Or vice-versa. Not to mention no game will make your card run at those temperatures.

For overclocking almost any will do. Since you have an MSI card, you can stick to MSI Afterburner. But if you don't like it you can try Trixx or the Asus one I forgot the name. They usually work all the same, but you may find one will let you tweak something the other won't.

I am also of the opinion that crysis 3 maxed out is an excellent test of overclocking stability, it will definitely find any borderline overclock within a quick period of time.

As far as the best utility, i'm partial to MSI afterburner. It adds additional features at a faster pace than EVGA precision, and they're both created by the same person (unwinder).

Aren't they basically just different skins of RivaTuner? With some additional button here or there, but the important parts are identical. I like the graphs in AB, but I also like Trixx which is very basic but gets the job done with no fuzz.

For stability checking I use Unigine Valley & Heaven maxed out. That represents any worst case scenario I could reasonably have in real life.

This in its entirety. I use Unigine for all testing. I only flip into Kombuster for a moment to check load clocks. It's useless for testing overclock scaling, which you need if you're touching VRAM clocks.

My components should be delivered tonight. So hopefully I'll get some decent overclocking in tonight or tomorrow. I'm looking to wring every frame out of that 965 BE and 650 Ti. I know it's not a great build but it should be a decent mid range system.

Unwinder was the author of riva tuner, but he discontinued it in 2009? I think. Also, Afterburner is updated more frequently than EVGA precision and has a few more features.
