If you have never played the game then you just hear a "crappy ass midi file" as one poster eloquently put it. However, when I hear this it triggers the memory in my brain when the hairs on my neck stood on end following the story and being taken aback at how well the music complemented the story.

I'm going to have to be honest here which will probably sound rather strange.

The original playstation Dooms, Tombraider & resident evil audio.

Also the original soundtrack to MDK(Murder Death Kill) and of course all the Total War games have amazing scores.

This isnt the best game music, id give that to starcraft terran 1 or the dr wily theme from megaman. But i dont think its been posted yet:

Zero wing: Barricade zone

Zero wing: Gerbarra

Zero wind: Legrous

The other levels are good too, but these are my favourites.

Sonic and knuckles: Death egg act 2

Sonic and knuckles: Lava reef zone act 1

Sonic 2: Metropolis zone

Just in case anyone doesn't know, a lot of the old school video game music (GB, Genesis, NES, SNES, N64, SMS/Game Gear, PC Engine, GBA, PS1, and PS2) can be found at Zophar's Domain's Video Game Music section. You need a separate player or plugins (i.e. for WinAmp, Foobar, etc) for the music, but it's worth it. Have been using ZD for years now. Definitely one a favorite site of mine, and a reliable one.

Maybe it's already been mentioned, but do y'all know about OCremix.org? Remixed versions of TONS of video game music.

BTW, I like Super Mario 1 (just because it's the first game I really played a lot), Mario 3, Chrono Trigger - for recent games, I thought the Max Payne theme was pretty sweet, and some of the Medal of Honor music.... that taiko drums one from Medal of Honor: Rising Sun was awesome.

To the OP: Death Egg Zone in Sonic and Knuckes was way better.
