Favoritism - Widely spread? Can you do ANYTHING about it?

To those who work in corporate environments, how is the favoritism? Can you do anything about it? If so, what? Do you feel doomed sometimes, like your management is out to get you because you're asian, black, white, latino, homosexual, overweight, etc?

I have seen some flavor of favoritism at my work place, but not enough to bother me with my work performance.
If it gets too extreme, I will take my experty somewhere else. Their lost.

It's not always blatant. Sometimes the person doesn't even know they're doing it. That's why the tall, skinny guy who dresses well and smiles a lot will get the raise, while the short, fat guy with bad hygene and depression will get the worst projects.

You can't help but have favoritism. Think about school - the teachers aren't supposed to favor people, "officially", but they do, to some degree. I don't think it's really based on race or nationality, but who knows?

Favoritism is a fact of life. Managers are going to like certain employees better than others, sometimes for legitimate reasons (they work harder, have a better personality) other times for crappy reasons (skin color, weight). Either way, the boss is going to have his favorites.

No, I don't feel like management in general is out to get me. If you find that your bosses are showing favoritism to others and not yourself, try not blaming it on things you can't change but things that you can (i.e. come to work with a good attitude, don't spend all your time on ATOT, get your projects done early, etc.). You will find yourself moving up the corporate ladder quicker and you will realize that good ol fashioned working hard and being easy to work with will get you places.
