American food slices as they're called are not technically cheese. I wrote the Kraft company wanting to know what those ingredients were before I gave them to my kids. They wrote back saying they wouldn't tell me! So now I buy them real American cheese from the deli, and that is real cheese.

For myself, I like pretty much any cheese. Feta, swiss, havarti, blue, and that greek cheese that's used for saganaki, I can't remember the name, but Oopa! that stuff rocks.

oniq -- "American cheese" is neither. It's something made from an industrial strength chemistry set. I think it's one of the things we're worried Saddam Hussein is cooking up for chemical warfare.

Sour and bitter, much like my ex mother-in-law. Oh yeah, and runny and slimy too. It's an acquired taste, but I guess once you like it, you love it. I never could get used to it.

It's not runny, but it can go a bit slimey in texture if it is hot.

It is slightly bitter, but the taste is very smooth.

The real Camenbert comes from France and can't be legally purchased in the US because it is made from non pasturised milk. It has to be carefully ripened and sold just at the right moment. What we call Camenbert is a different animal but it's yummy in its own way. As with wine, the US has gotten cleaver with cheese. California is a huge producer. The french rae into cheese though:
