UPDATED 1:51 p.m. ET

U.S. officials on Friday arrested a Moroccan man they say was planning a suicide mission at the U.S. Capitol, a law enforcement official told CBS News.

The man was never a real threat and part of an apparent sting, the official told CBS News.

The suspect is a 29 year old in the United States illegally and living in Alexandria, Virginia, officials said.

The man had been seeking assistance in executing a terrorist attack against the United States, and officials had investigating him for months. FBI agents arrested him in his garage in Alexandria after providing him with what he believed was a suicide vest.

Additional reporting by Andres Triay and John Miller.

:hmm:

I beg to differ that "the man was never a real threat". He was definitely a threat, but he got caught in the sting before he actually was able to carry out anything. Anyone who was "seeking assistance in executing a terrorist attack" is a threat and should be permanently in jail.

Whats up with these incompetent terrorists? They obviously don't have problems making suicide vests in 3rd world shitholes and its not hard to learn to make something that goes boom from the internet.

I would wager that just about anyone here could make a something that goes boom without having to ask someone "hey, could you help me make a suicide vest".

I for one am really glad that most of these people are idiots. Imagine how bad it would be if they were smart. Then again, if they weren't idiots they wouldn't be terrorists anyway.

Maybe it's all BS to drum up support for the ever wasteful and greedy military industrial complex?

I think it was a poor choice of words. This was CBS News paraphrasing something said by a "law enforcement official." What was probably meant was that the specific attack he was planning that he is now being detained for had no chance of success.

Yes, because suicide bombers are something new, and rather unusual when carried by Muslims.

Maybe they should be apprehended after the fact.

Likely this.

Also, they're catching the low hanging fruit -- the unhappy, immature, emotionally adrift and needy kind that would post their intentions on OT along with how much money they make.

Frankly I don't see what all the fuss about terrorists is about. Excluding 9/11 the vast majority of them fail badly.

I like how it keeps turning up that the so-called terrorists were in the US illegally, and yet the politically-correct sensitivity dummies bend over backwards protecting the "rights" of those who entered the US illegally.

Disclaimer: This is a purely fictional anectode. Seriously. Fictional. Seriously.

Some guy at the cia writes him an email and says "are you pissed off?" " you wish you could blow up some shizz?"

The poor sap responds "Hell yeah I'm pissed off, I wish I could blow up some shizz".

The cia goon says "I can get you sum stuffz to blowz up some shizz"

The poor sap says "no thanks I'm just mad not stupid."

The cia goon deletes that particular message, because, you know, it had to go.

Boom they arrest the guy and the president's poll numbers go up.

Well anyone dumb enough to believe the 72 male virgins thing or whatever shouldn't really be expected to execute a successful attack on a first world country.

Excluding 9/11 over a decade ago, they are in the states.

And why is it so? Hint: it is not because they are now prohibited by Muslim clerics or out of fashion. Potential terrorists are intercepted before you get to hear about it.

The resources it would take to track down everyone here illegally and deport them, and to continue to do so for folks who legally enter and don't leave probably GREATLY exceeds the cost to track down the incredibly small percentage of the population interested in engaging in terrorism. Not everything is an opportunity to push your political ideology...

Not to be a smart ass, but how do you know? "I don't see any terrorists, it must be because our anti-terrorism policies are working." seems like some flawed reasoning to me.

Or in terms of "The Simpsons"..."I don't see any bears around here, the bear patrol is working perfectly!"

They are such incompetent idiots, we just cake-walked our way through Afghanistan and Iraq.

Your guess is as good as mine. All I know is that "they" have their own resources, operatives, determination and motivation. In most cases, unless immediate prevention was required by local police forces, you might not hear about the attempts so that intelligence sources aren't compromised.

Don't underestimate the stupid. The most dangerous part of them is they do things which are utterly incomprehensible and completely unpredictable to an intelligent mind.
