Anyhow, good luck!

Seriously... AS5 stupid?

I've put together countless computers over the years.. i mean, like a good 10yr period here easy..

I've had every problem, and i've always worked it out, one way or another, but the thing is, i like to think i know what i'm doing...

Putting a cpu in, is an extremely simple task imo.. i've done it so many times, i've never ever bent a cpu pin before.. (vga pins YES MANY TIMES )

and I should also say, i had absolutly no problems, pulling off the cpu to apply as5, i've felt a cpu get stuck to the thermal paste&HSF and this was hardly the case.. All you have to do in those cases, is heat up the cpu, (some intesive apps) turn off the computer, unhook the hs&f wiggle the hs a bit, and it normally comes off pretty easy after a bit of wigglin...

but besides which, i'm not in the slighest bit scared or afraid in putting a cpu on.. i've done it so many times before, it's so easy..

but this mofo just litterally had 2 pins fall off somwhere...

and no, this was not a stupid hard core mod, it's simple and minor, it's hardly a mod by most people books.

Actually --in certain circumstances YES!! AS5 is stoopid!!
You`ve heard the saying stoopid is as stoopid does?

In this case...the answer to that question is YES!!!

yea well putting in a cpu is quite easy but this is the good ole 21st century now. NO more 370 pin sockets NO more 462 pins sockets.. We are talkin about 939 really thin and very bendable pins. Man i put together quite a few 939 setups and it still makes me nervous to hold one of those A64s that are 939. Hell i have a whole bunch of socket A Axps that i dont mind juggling for a show and then putting them in a socket.

Well if worst comes to worst and the chip becomes unusable, You can always tie a string to 2 sides of the cpu by its pins and hang it on your wall. Then you will probably be the only one to say you have a DUAL CORE CPU HANGING ON YOUR WALL. See it isnt that bad is it?

Man...your lucky that's for sure, the cpu will still post..but no dual channel . Under my sig is my first build, and the first time I took out the cpu to reapply a new thermal paste (AS5) since I was rmaing a dead mobo or ram "didn't know which one " But I was able to take it out with no bent pins, all straight, nice and steady. Thank goodness for the calligraphy class ....phew

How do you suggest, cleaning the old thermal paste off of it?

since you cant use dual channel you should try overclocking your ram to get close to stock performance, heh

clean it off while the cpu is in socket....? i've done it before on my k6-3 and k7s

i seriously don't trust the cpu pins in ANYWHERE besides the socket.

These 2 pins were bent before too, and well, they basically prevented me from posting in dual channel, but i straightend them up, and it worked, however, they were very brittle and have snapped off, far too easily...

So now i'm stuck with an X2 3800 which can not opperate in dual channel memory.

I was thinking i could maybe solder them back on espically considering they are in the far corner.... but i have no idea where the pins even are now, more so, I really don't feel too comfortable soldering on a chip like the x2-3800, espically cuz my soldering skills are very very poor...

I'm so sad, i've put together soo many machines before, and this is the first time, i've actually, spent so much $$$ on a damn cpu, only to have it do this now!!!

poor guy

Scuks man. Try to RMA it to AMD. If two of the pins indeed were bent when you purchased it. It was defective.

It's too bad they don't come up with a new mechanism to clamp and unclamp the CPU while the heat sink is installed. I also yanked a cpu out of a clamped socket (thankfully no damage) and I've heard way too many stories of similiar incidents.

Sorry to hear that happened to you OP....

RMA? AMD has a 3 year warranty? I called their tech support about two years ago for AMD64 regarding pins and he says you can ship it in. RMA with retailor? That really is weird, you should have RMAd when you bent the pins. I did that with my first Clawhammer.

I wouldn't really suggest soldering them back on, I mean, unless you can get it perfect, I have no idea what will happen. Plus, putting a solder to your CPU is better grounds for voiding your warranty than breaking two pins.

Hmm.. so you reckon, if i contact AMD directly, they will take it, even now, even after the 2 pins have broken off?

Even though, i am also in australia?

get an old cpu and break 2 pins, then take those 2 pins and insert them to the socket where they would normally go , and put the X2 back in, if youre lucky they should still make contact and no soldering required.

PD. im not to be held responsible for partial or full dmg to your cpu/head/brain.

hey, thats an interesting idea...

GuniGuGu:

Yeah, try giving them a few calls. It can't hurt. If you call enough, you might land on the right support guy.

Better yet, try contacting the retailor you purchased it from.

RMA it and say it came like that. I blew up my PSU, RMA'd it and said it came like that. Works a treat.

I always thought AMD processors looked less physically durable than most Intel ones. I had a K6-2 in my hand the other day and it was a flimsy looking thing, my A64 looks durable though.
