OKies.. so i've been messing a bit with my cpu, and i took it out again today to put some AS5 on it, and as i'm cleaning the heatsink, i've rested the cpu on the fabric + plastic casing that the cpu actually comes in (the one inside the box) anyhoo, as i pick up the cpu, I find 2 pins have broken off!!!!

These 2 pins were bent before too, and well, they basically prevented me from posting in dual channel, but i straightend them up, and it worked, however, they were very brittle and have snapped off, far too easily...

So now i'm stuck with an X2 3800 which can not opperate in dual channel memory.

I was thinking i could maybe solder them back on espically considering they are in the far corner.... but i have no idea where the pins even are now, more so, I really don't feel too comfortable soldering on a chip like the x2-3800, espically cuz my soldering skills are very very poor...

I'm so sad, i've put together soo many machines before, and this is the first time, i've actually, spent so much $$$ on a damn cpu, only to have it do this now!!!

I think you can find some similar copper pins of equal diameter (heck got an older cpu???)...Might as well do it...

Wy do you have to take the cpu out to apply AS5??? I never take it out....Lay the case on its side and without the massive XP90 in there I have no issues getting my hand in there...

if u going to solder you better have a steady hand and a magnifying glass n clamp.

Its a touchy job soldering on cpu s or there plate , a magnif and clamp in one is the go, holds it steady as you solder with it magnified.I wouldnt let the soldering iron heat the cpu pin base to much.
The biggest problem this leaves even if you get it right is , you may not be able to remove the cpu ever again as the strength in solder , well the pins will probly stay in the socket when you remove cpu. Snap off , sure the old one aint in the socket still ?
Bent pins usually means you didnt pull it out dead straight and for the corner to go it seems as you ve removed it you ve pulled more and more out of square with cpu socket .

good luck.....

I'm gonna say, damn, you were lucky!

You could be stuck w/o a CPU altogether.

No dual channel isn't the end of the world.

Also, like Duvie said, next time leave the CPU in the socket. I've never taken mine out when re-applying AS5, or the HSF, etc.

Oh man...sorry to hear that. It seems as though you didn't put it in/take it out of the socket head-on. I guess you could try soldering like piddlefoot suggested.

Duvie-Thanks for the PM

Duvie-Quick question. I'll be almost complete w/ my system soon...it's similar (same cpu) to yours. What kind of temps do you get with that cooler?

YHPM...keep it out of this topic....

Exactly!!!

Also sure AS5 is good but.......its not worth messing up a CPU!!!

hmmmm why not try this out?

get an old cpu and break 2 pins, then take those 2 pins and insert them to the socket where they would normally go , and put the X2 back in, if youre lucky they should still make contact and no soldering required.

PD. im not to be held responsible for partial or full dmg to your cpu/head/brain.

Thanks for the advice guys..... for the records though, i took the cpu out, so i could give it a good clean, take off all the old thermal pad crap... it actually dropped about 5degree's with the as5 on it... but regardless, the cpu was ok.. it was just how i sat it down in the packaging, when i went to clean the heatsink..

I really don't think i'm too capable of soldering 2 pins onto the cpu, and i completely understand there being a problem, later on, taking the cpu out, as the solder can't be all that strong... I wish I could take it to a jewler, except, i'm doubt any of them, will want to take on the job. also, the only old cpu's i got here, are old celeron's, and there pins are too big....

So there's still a problem, but not all is dead...

I have done that three Times but none of those times did a pin get bent it wasn't till a friend did that and lost 2 pins that I started Using a dull knife to use as leverage to get the HSF off.

Are you sure all is working except dual channel??? I would run prime, super pi, nd memtest to make sure all is working okay.. If single channel works, then I guess you're good to go.

And, maybe you will get a super duper overclocking chip now since there will be less stress on the mem controller

Also, when and where did you get the chip?? Perhaps you can contact AMD with a little white lie and get an RMA going.

I've learned my lesson, and it's a lesson all should take to heart:

IF YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO LOSE ALL THE MONEY YOU PUT INTO A PART, THEN DON'T FREAKIN' VOID YOUR WARRANTY BY DOING STUPID STUFF. I lost a 1 month old 9700 pro when they first came out because of some mods.... that sucked!!!

Anyhow, good luck!

There is a guy on the web that will fix it for you for a good price, if I find the website I will post it.

Look on the bright side.....

At least you didnt try to re attach those pins with a blow torch and burn the damn house down......

if i were you, run a few stress tests to see if the cpu is still stable...then just keep the cpu. It's still a great cpu even without dual channel. Don't risk dmging it more.

Well to be quite true, the cpu came to me, with what i am almost convinced was 2 bent pins...

I bent them back, and decided to give it a go, worked no probs..

then i went and took out the cpu to clean it (prep for AS5) and noticed a pin was missing...

I packed it up all in the originally packing exactly how i got it new, took it back to the shop i got it from, and they refused to replace it

so i brought it back home and took out the cpu, only this time, to find another pin had fallen off and was stuck in that foamy bit that the cpu comes in...

I'll be quite frank, i think i was given a cpu with some very botched pins... that we're ready to break from the start
