I was looking through some of the in game screenshots and wasn't very impressed. Is it just me or does the graphics look very outdated already? Character models look pretty bad and textures look low in detail. Hopefully the developers can bring more to the plate than just pretty particle effects.

Well to me, graphics are overrated. They make the game a little 'cooler' in a sense but I would prefer a game with bad graphics that has much better content/gameplay. The first FEAR was very well done, and the graphics we good at that time but the game itself was very good.

You can't really see vertex and shader effects well in static screenshots anymore. You need video to really get a feel for it (think of like heat-wave effects from fire).

That said, I would be just as content if FEAR 2 released with the FEAR 1 graphics engine. I expect the gameplay will rock.

Didn't a very similar thing happen before FarCry 2 came out? People posting screenshots and saying it looked terrible, but when the final game came out it looked just fine?

I think we should wait until the final release is out before passing judgement.

KT

Edit: hmm, that whole thread was a disaster, so maybe it is not relevant here: http://forums.anandtech.com/me..._key=y&keyword1=farcry

I've seen the AI, and it's not badass like, it's somethin you've never seen before. It's definately good though. Best parts probably are the puppetmasters and the spectre's. Dave Matthews, the guy who gave the presentation, was really vocal about the AI, saying how an encounter with those monsters would never be exactly the same.

I did get to play the game a little, but can't really say how well the AI tries to create cover for itself, or if they really look for a watersource when they are on fire. An interesting piece of info was that they hired an ex-delta force guy, and made your opponents work like a delta-force team, clearing the rooms etc, but that way it was nearly impossible to win, so they had to turn it down a notch. Might be PR though, but it did make me wonder, maybe ultrahigh difficulty still has those settings.

As for the graphics, I've only played on xbox 360, but it looked good enough to me. I'm pretty sure most screenshots are taken on the xbox, so the PC version might look better. And, most of the time they don't do full debugging runs near the end, and then add all the lighting and what not. Me, I wouldn't worry to much about the graphics. It's also how the game uses it's graphics to create that horrorlike atmosphere, where Alma could creep up on you at every moment.

Well, it's a trend lately, mostly due to console ports, look at the graphics and animations of Fallout 3, it looks like a game from 2002, but it's very addictive and the game-play itself is actually good, so if you like the game you should be able to forget about the outdated visuals, lots of people keep saying that graphics don't make a game anyway, and if you're part of that group then you shouldn't worry too much about the graphics.

When I played F.E.A.R I got really dizzy for some reason, almost threw up after 2 hours of playing nonstop. I thought the game was kinda long, needed more variety of enemies, cut down on the number of clone soldiers, and maybe add something else.

I'm definitely picking up Project Origin. I remember being terrified of the original FEAR, and even though I'm not a horror fan, it was such a breath of fresh air that I fell in love with it. I also thought the feel of combat was superb, as well as the general pacing of the game between combat/non-combat.

I loved the clone soldiers and disliked the other enemies. Mostly because the clone soldiers were so damn smart. For what it is, I appreciate that the enemies are "realistic." Its not Doom.

I'm looking forward to this and the same graphics from the first fear with a little tweaking would be spectacular IMHO. Hopefully they spend the time making the game great since the engine is already there.

Nat

*were either of the two expansions worth picking up? Do they require the original FEAR to be installed?

Perseus Mandate is a stand-alone expansion and Extraction Point requires the original F.E.A.R. to be installed, I enjoyed both the expansions because I enjoy the core game-play of the series, don't expect more than what got from the first one and you shouldn't be disappointed.

Graphics are overrated.

Hell if they used the same engine from the original FEAR and just pumped the gameplay up 100 fold I would be happy. I don't understand why graphics must be the best next thing... hell, after 1 hour you get used to it.

true. Perseus Mandate is literally the rail from the first one backwards, with some new weapons and enemies. Total money grab but still fun.

Far Cry 2 is beautiful but I couldn't play more than about 15 minutes. F.E.A.R. with outdated graphics > FarCry2 with the latest and greatest ANY day

I still love the graphics from the original Fear. The lighting and shadowing is amazing, as is the way it interacts with the game?s surfaces. The engine is incredible with regards to rendering realistic looking indoor surfaces.

Perhaps they are targeting the console market?
