A Greek life camping retreat sponsored by the University of Mississippi over the weekend was canceled after a group of black students discovered a discarded banana peel in a tree.

Organized by Fraternity and Sorority Life and the national group IMPACT, students had settled in at Camp Hopewell in Lafayette County for a three-day retreat, which was cut short Saturday after three black students discovered the banana peel in front of one of the camp’s cabins, The Daily Mississippian student newspaper reported Wednesday.

“It was so strange and surreal to see it there,” Makala McNeil, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, told the paper. “We were all just sort of paranoid for a second.”

The incident sparked “a day’s worth of camp-wide conversation surrounding symbolism, intended or not,” the paper reported.

Senior accounting major Ryan Swanson admitted during the group sessions that he discarded the banana peel in the tree after he couldn’t find a trash can nearby.

“I want to sincerely apologize for the events that took place this past weekend,” Mr. Swanson told The Daily Mississippian in a statement. “Although unintentional, there is no excuse for the pain that was caused to members of our community.

“I want to thank my friends in the [National Pan-Hellenic Council] for their candid and constructive conversations that we have continued to have,” he said. “I have much to learn and look forward to doing such and encourage all members of our university community to do the same. We must all keep in mind how our actions affect those around us differently.”

The discussions Saturday ended with some students leaving in tears, The Daily Mississippian reported. The retreat was eventually canceled later that evening.

“At that point, we didn’t feel welcome; we didn’t feel safe,” Ms. McNeil said. “If we didn’t feel wanted or safe at the camp, our best option was to leave.”

Alexa Lee Arndt, the interim director of Fraternity and Sorority Life who was acting in an administrative capacity at the retreat, said “many members of our community were hurt, frightened and upset by what occurred at IMPACT.”

“Because of the underlying reality many students of color endure on a daily basis, the conversation manifested into a larger conversation about race relations today at the University of Mississippi,” she told The Daily Mississippian.

Katrina Caldwell, vice chancellor for diversity and community engagement, said her office was asked to put a plan together to address the incident.

“Right now, we’re just talking to people on campus who have some experience working across diversity to help the students process what happened,” Ms. Caldwell said.

Yup, the snowflakes are at it again. This time a banana peel causes angst, fear and the need for safe-spaces. This would have been hilarious if there were no adults involved.

All this does is make current students and those in charge look like a bunch of neurotic fools.

And 38% of Americans believe in "Creationism".

It's a wacky country filled with wacky folks. Hell, look at who was recently elected president.

It is a wacky country but I can't help but think that the student body on our colleges have gone bananas (bah dum tsss).

I think a lot of college kids (or just that age group in general) are out there looking for outrage even when not warranted. They've got the anger and righteousness and such all penned up inside and are out there on the hunt looking for something to trigger it, to go off on in a fantastical indulgence of self fulfillment because now they are part of a movement and a cause. Social media fans the flames to convince these otherwise rational folk to be completely offended and outraged at the most trivial or even worse nonexistent things. They break down in tears, fear for their safety for some reason (I dont think it's fear of violence so I'm assuming an emotional safety?), and indulge themselves in this feeling they being victimized in some way and fighting this oppressive force in this noble fight against every little microaggression they come across. Everyone else is just thinking "just please don't turn my school into Mizzou".

There are good fights to be fought and I encourage them to do so, but trying to connect dots that dont exist and causing real repercussions for other people as a result isn't helpful either.

Wacky country, wacky times

What am I missing here? Is this some kind of strange symbolism?

Yeah it's a racist held belief that blacks are genetically inferior and less evolved, so "closer to monkeys" hence the banana.

Apparently this why the right is less educated and constantly complaining about jobs? This is a lame excuse not to go to college.

Ah, still doesn't really explain the reaction, but at least I get the context now. None of the articles I looked up actually explained the symbolism.

The reaction was somebody looking for something to be outraged about.

Hey look, some context from a non-biased source:
Makala McNeil, president of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, one of the nine historically African-American sororities and fraternities, said she saw the banana peel after leaving a group discussion that addressed race relations...“It was so strange and surreal to see it there,” McNeil said. “We were all just sort of paranoid for a second.”
She said the image was especially disturbing in light of an incident on American University’s campus in May of this year. The morning Taylor Dumpson was to take over as the school’s first female black student government president, students found bananas hanging from nooses across campus. Some of the bananas were inscribed with references to Dumpson’s sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

I think its tough to draw a comparison from the first week back at class. Move in week\weekend is a HUGE party weekend for many colleges. I'm on site at a campus right now and drove in to overflowing trash bins and various debris on the sidewalk, on porches and trees. The campus grounds grew was hard at work at 7am but I still saw (among many many other things) pizza crusts, beer cans, a shoe and even a banana peel (and part of a banana) where they should not have been. Nothing wrong with it generating a discussion and I'm curious to know the events that occurred at the discussion but I think there is a very decent chance there was no malice behind this incident.

But mysteriously, only conservatives seem to be offended by non-whites, non-Christians, LGBT people and science.

I'd rather freak out over a banana than an entire culture.

I think you are projecting, but please do expound upon this silly notion whilst I enjoy a delicious banana in your honour.

How many liberals do you know that join neo-Nazi groups, or demonize all Muslims, deny climate science or write laws intended to discriminate against LGBT people? Right... none.

This doesn't mean that all conservatives practice these views, to be clear, but conservatism is more supportive of these views by its very nature. After all, conservatism is defined by its resistance to differences and change (unless, of course, it's a return to the past).

Basically: there's a tremendous irony to trying to attack liberals over a banana overreaction when your 'camp' is a haven for people who despise anyone who doesn't look, act or think like them.

How many liberals do you know that join communist groups, or demonize all Christians, push deranged "climate science" or write laws intended to discriminate against anyone they are jealous of? Right... LOTS.

Seems there's a few "Nazi Fighters!" pissing themselves over 'alt right' banana peels as well. Such a brave bunch. (bah dump bump!)
