In the case with the OP I don't think it was a hoax, I think it was people being overly sensitive and honestly looking for something to be outraged about. They discussed, groupthink occurred and they worked each other up, and all of the sudden the University of Mississippi has a race issue on their hands when in reality there was none. In the examples I linked yes I do think they made it up. It's not a matter of trust.

Shit like that undermines situations when there really is something there. It sets race relations back which I think we could agree isn't a good thing.

Of course not. The real issue is why is there so much race tension and how do we solve that, how do we progress as a nation and move past skin color. Police shooting its involving a much larger percent of blacks is a problem, and "driving while black" is a problem. Socioeconomic disadvantages for blacks is a problem. Incarceration rates and sentencing for blacks is a problem. And yes people being ok with racism directed towards white people has become a problem too, wrapped up in the guise of "context" and "history".

We've regressed in terms of race relations in this country which is a shame.

Well they aren't the ones that published this all over the internet and made national news stories out of it. That would be conservatives who were outraged that blacks would be outraged about a banana.
