well there have been mumblings of it for a long while now, rumours of a netmeet in southern ontario.....

FEBRURARY 2002!
DOWNTOWN TORONTO.

i have been selected as the one that is organsiing this madness *thankyou SOOOOOOOOOOOO much sully* so what i need now is the numbers of people who want to come.

we are thinking maybe a restaurant with tvs and stuff (sports bar?) so we can watch the olympics and drink (those of us that are of age) and talk and stuff.

depending on where people are coming from (come on, ny and ohio are not that far from toronto and YOU know it!) we may have to change and adapt plans depending on if its a big gathering or if it turns into just us cute little locals chillin in a coffee shop.


so this is what i need from YOU.

3. what is the best weekend for you? the weekend of the 16th is out for me so it cant be that weekend (im allowd to be selfish because im organising )

i guarentee that it will be worth the drive to toronto, cuz we are a bunch of really fun people, i swear it!
if you've never been to toronto, come out, it's a beautiful city and there is tonnes to do besides meet us

Wow, never thought I'd get thanked for passing the buck on organizing the little net-meet details...no problem!

Um, obviously enough eakers and myself will be showing. We fully expect the other ATOT regulars who live in the area to show - that means you: GL, N8Magic, Optimus, Elita1, a billion others...if just to cheer on Team Canada during the Olympics! The timing will be perfect for hockey in the Olympics.

Events of February 23rd/24th, 2002

• Very relaxed dinner together in a likely sports-themed restaurant (about 7-8 PM on the 23rd and onwards)
• A slightly wilder time at a yet-to-be-determined place during the nighttime hours (12-1 AM through the night)
• Orgy.
• Showing people new to Toronto some of the sights in the daytime hours remaining? (most of the 24th)

We'll see what the boss has to say. Remember that being 19 gets you into any place up in Toronto, and that if successfully pulled off this will probably be remembered for some time in AT history. So help keep this thread up for more people to see, the more the better!

People from states just south of Toronto can realistically be able to make it for the day and we can probably arrange sleeping accomodations if the turnout is significant enough for people far away. We're already expecting some people from the NYC and Boston area. Um, so let's recount your reasons to come up for the day and night:

1. Canadians are great to meet, talk, drink and have orgies with.
2. Toronto's a fun city, and what the hell else are you going to do on a weekend in February?
3. Exchange rate, exchange rate, exchange rate. 1.00 USD = 1.60791 CAD, more than a dollar and a half!
4. Show your SO what you've been wasting all those hours on the computer for!
5. Nobody's ever done anything like this up north, so be a part of AT history! We'll arrange a few digital cameras to preserve the occasion, of course.

That's all for now...remember, this is still a month away so you have plenty of time to let us know if you're at least interested, and then we'll nail down a final date (likely on a Friday/weekend, kat?) that's agreeable to the largest swath of people. Anyway, let's hear your thoughts.

I wonder whose gonna make it... I think most people here are too far to make it to toronto (even to see eakers! ) but I live in Chicago and will probably be going there with my gf anyways... I'd personally prefer toward the end of the month, but I'd hate to say something and then not be able to make it at the last second.

It does sound like fun though. I've never been around a collection of geeks since my CS373 course two years ago...

Well, you and I both know how tough it's going to be to get accomodations/tickets to SLC that time of year. The 23/24 of February has the Olympic ice hockey bronze and gold/silver matches during them, which is perfect for us up here. When you add to that the number of Toronto people who can come out as the core group...

Saltin, no problem. If you say you'll be here we'll save a doily-covered seat for you as well, all you'll probably need to do is ask for the AT or AnandTech tables and the hostess should usher you into the welcoming party's (eakers) arms.

Hmmm, not a bad idea. This whole having no Monday classes this semester might pay off (again). I'll have to look into what's going on that weekend, that is, of course, if eakers can stand having a cold-hearted Republican bastard (me) at this little shindig.

Wow, it could be a lot of fun. I live in Philly, so it's perfectly possible that I could go, but I don't know if that is feasible/realistic. I've been to Toronto about 3 times before, so I know it's a place that's worth a drive, though it is almost 500 miles away. If I were to drive that kind of distance, I'd like to be at my destination for awhile, not just a weekend. I work full-time so I don't know how I'd work it all out.

The exchange rate is pretty great right now, so it's not an expensive trip. You can easily find hotels in downtown Toronto that are under $100USD/night, especially in February. But being February, the weather can be fickle up there and who knows if you'd be caught in a snowstorm. That's a large risk if you have to drive a long ways.

Let's move this to State College, PA! It's in between Toronto, NYC, Philly, DC, Columbus, Cleveland.

Well from Raleigh, NC to Toronto is a 15-16 hour drive according to mapquest.
