February 2008 Monthly Photography Contest

Welcome to monthly contest #9!
So as i stated near the end of last months contest i will be taking over for blurredvision . The two ways still apply to submit an entry either Email at Alfa147x (at) gmail.com or PM me. This months i put up "Odd Lighting" "Every Day Items" and "Any Thing" as for the categories. Excited to see what people will be able to do with the Odd Lighting and how people can get creative with the Every Day Items. I think we should stick with the "Any Thing" category that way if one person happens to take a picture that it a great shot but does not fit in any category now they can submit it.

  February Contest Dates:
  
  • Photo must be taken between February 1 - 25, 2008.
  • Photo must be submitted by end of day, February 26, 2008.
  • Voting begins the morning of February 26, 2008, and will run through the evening of March 2nd .
  • Winner to be announced at the end of voting.
  Primary February 2008 Contest Theme:
  
  • "Odd Lighting"
    • Lets find that lighting angle that emphasizes photos in a way we haven't seen
    • If there are any questions on the subject matter, let's discuss it here.
  Secondary February 2008 Contest Theme:
  
  • "Everyday Objects "
    • We take these objects for granted but they can make interesting shots.
    • Lets see what people call everyday objects, lets not get too abstract with this one
  Tertiary February 2008 Contest Theme:
  
  • "Anything Goes"
    • I liked the idea of people taking a picture and it being a awesome shot but it not fitting in any category
    • Please keep the pictures SAFE FOR WORK
  The General Rules:
  
  • Submitted photos must easily pertain to the contest subject matter.
  • Contest eligible pictures MUST be taken within the dates stated for this month's contest.
  • Only one submitted photo per entrant per catagory
  • Full EXIF info is strongly suggested to be retained with any submitted picture. I am ceasing to make this a requirement, due to the fact that this is merely a fun and no-prize contest.
  • Submitted photos must abide by forum rules (which basically means no nudity)
  Post-Processing Rules:
  
  • We are now going to dispense with any PP rules. Anything is allowed, but I still want to discourage the following:
    • Try to refrain from turning your photo into "graphic art".
    • I would like to discourage major cloning and photo transplants.
  Submission Rules:
  
  • Each person is given until the time that I put up the voting to submit their picture. Polls are usually erected the morning of the start date of voting.
  • Smallest picture size available to submit will be limited to 1200 pixels on the smallest side. This gives everyone with atleast a 2MP camera a chance to enter. (Any arguements on this one?) - UPDATE: If anyone has any problems with this, we can dispense with this rule. Now that I think about it, any full-size originals you submit to me will be available for anyone here to grab.
  • Please submit JPG's only! (Highest quality setting for JPG is suggested to reduce compression artifacts.)
  • Your final entry can be made at any time between the start of the contest itself until the submission deadline stated above.
  • Each member will have only ONE chance to submit a final entry for the contest. Once you submit, that is it.
  Submitting Your Entry:
  
  • There will be two ways to get your photo to me:
    • Email your photo to alfa147x at gmail dot com, and BE SURE to include your username in the body of the email. Sometimes I've had to go back and references people's profiles on here with the email address. Luckily I've not had any problems yet with matching photos to users without having to send emails back and forth. Please send a PM indicating an email has been sent just incase it's put in the spam folder.
    • PM me with a link to your full-size photo on the web.
  Voting:
  
  • Voting will begin at the date stated at the start of this thread.
  • The gallery will be available to view at all times as pictures are added throughout the contest, however all final entries will be posted in this thread with links, along with a poll at the top of the thread.
  • Voting will stay open until the deadline.
  Prizes:
  
  • Due to the nature of the contest being ran by regular members, there are no prizes to be offered. You will only gain the satisfaction of being chosen by the members of Anandtech as the best in this month's theme.
  • If any prizes are able to be given away in any future contests, I will be sure to outline the details. If you do not see mention of a prize, then assume there isn't one.
  Errors/Omissions:
  
  • I try my best to keep everything organized on my end in regards to picture submissions and the names of users that submitted those. If you find any errors, PLEASE let me know so I may correct them. I've not been told that I've linked to wrong pictures, or labeled pictures with the wrong usernames yet, so I must be doing something right. But that's the last thing I want is giving credit for a photo to the wrong person.

You can scan your film picture , the meta data will have to be on your honor

Nah I'm in the mood for digital. I shoot to much film in my classes. I need a break from it.

odd lighting?

I don't think I've ever seen anything I would call "odd" lighting. I would say good, bad or interesting/artistic. Odd?

I think of "odd lighting" as an unusual use of light, different angles than you might normally use, or unidentified lights in the sky.

(If you go with the last defintion, make sure that the photos are very distorted and grainy, or at least out of focus since that's the correct way to photograph that particular phenomenon. )


I took this last month so it doesn't qualify for the current contest, but I would definitely consider it to be odd lighting: Ceiling fan with UV bulbs.

I would go out, but it's been an extremely cold month. And just as well, with only 3 weeks left before Winter Quarter finals, I've got tons of work (and not just school work, research work as well for a lab I now work in).
