A friend from work told me about this treatment for severe diarrhea, and I thought we has joking.

Turns out that he wasn't.

Text.

Essentially the procedure involves taking stool samples from a healthy donor. These are then blended with sterile water to form a slurry and then filtered to keep the bacteria.

The patient then has a tube passed via the nose, down the gullet, past the stomach and into the intestine. The above slurry is the administered as an enema down this tube.

Apparently it has a cure rate of 80%, compared to 20% for the best other treatments.

Despite this apparent success, doctors have admitted that there are "aesthetic problems" with this treatment.

Wow! I can't even imagine having diarrhea so bad that it would require that treatment. Must be awful.

You would think they'd be able to produce some bacteria cocktail in the lab for the patients rather than just grinding up someone's crap.

Problem is that a lot of this is thought to be unknown.

Why someone would have "good" bacteria while someone else has "bad", but can't be identified. So it's a lot of guess work. Take a look at a lot of the probiotic stuff out there. All of them are different bacteria cultures.

The infection is life-threatening, so yeah, it's pretty awful.

Wow, that's odd. Looks likes sh!t really does treat. A month back, news did a story on a fecal transplant "cure" for some condition to restore the 'good' bacteria back into your bowels. Except the tube went from the back-in. Sounds nasty, but if it works, it works. As for going in the front end... I'd have to think it over.

In the link it says it's a 5-10 day treatment of enemas to the donor

In the original thRead, this "cure" was for MRSA. Basically antibiotics had knocked out all your benign bacteria, so only the resistant stuff was left. Put some more benign bacteria in there to compete with the resistant ones, and the infection subsides to a level your immune system can handle.
