thanks Kranky, Is this the data I need for years that I do not have detailed records? For many years I have only 1099 -Div that shows only the total yearly dividend, no quarterly breakdown. http://ir.aquaamerica.com/dividends.cfm
That link shows the quarterly dividends ($ per share) and the dates of each one. You can look up the stock price on those days (finance.google.com is one source) and determine how many shares you would have bought with your reinvested dividends. At that point you have the number of shares and the cost basis for each reinvested dividend and you can compute your cap gains on your stock sale for tax purposes. That should be all you need.
