When Rogers went down, his eyes rolled back. That's key, because at that point, the fight is usually over (unless the fighter makes a quick recovery and intelligently defends himself). Rogers leg went up toward his face because Fedor pushed it with his forearm on a missed punch. If you watched the replays, you'd see Rogers in the fetal position even after the fight was stopped. There was no way he was going to defend himself for another 5-10 seconds. Not with Fedor's ground and pound.

I saw the eyes roll back...no question it looked like lights out. But that just didn't follow like it normally would. The leg was both imo, rogers and fedor moving it. The hand was intentional.

But after the fight was stopped and fedor got up, watch rogers. He turns towards fedor immediately once his weight is off him, and roger's head is off the ground. A guy who is out of it not defending himself isn't going to do that nor be able to do that. And being on the ground for a while afterwards, that could have been the doctor and his crew double-checking etc.

Its not to say Rogers had a chance by any stretch imo, but if fights were stopped because the other fighter doesn't have a chance, this one would never have begun.

Overall I think it was an excellent fight for prime time nat'l tv. Rogers had some awesome moments in the fight and has reasons to be proud, and Fedor showed everyone the humble beast that he is. Even tho I think it was stopped early, it is more of a technical assessment than one that impacted the result or the length of the fight by much. I just think the ref didn't give Rogers a chance to survive it when I think there was a chance he could have if he avoided more blows (we'll never know.)

Rogers brought his leg up, as well as his hand to his face and turned away from Fedor. The fighter needs to continue defending himself, and that's exactly what Rogers was doing. He also talked to the ref immediately after the stoppage, surprised it was stopped. It is more audible on headphones.

Fighters have taken knockout blows like that and recovered after the initial thud by avoiding ensuing knockout shots long enough to shake off the rattling.

I think its obvious who the ref's fight night earnings were on.

In lighter divisions, yeah. And not against Fedor. They stop fights all the time when guys are "intelligently" defending themselves. Rogers was in the fetal position with his back to his opponent, and took another huge shot to the face. Fight was o-v-e-r.

only knock I have is that in his last 2 fights he seemed to be losing until connecting on one big punch. obviously you have to give him credit for staying in the fights and finding those openings, but they aren't the dominating wins that brings the mainstream attention

Watch the fight again, Fedor landed more punches on the feet than Rogers and took him down twice. Rogers had one sweep which resulted in a some ground and pound including a couple of clean shots, and of course that first shot that jacked Fedor's nose. But Fedor escaped by making him roll out of the armbar and got back on top. I'd have given the round to Fedor based on the takedowns, but I can see how someone might have had Rogers winning due to damage.

What impressed me about Rogers is that Fedor didn't just manhandle him in the clinch. That might be due in part to the weight differential, but the weight is meaningless without the balance and technique, especially against pretty much the best Sambo practitioner in the world.
