I have downloaded fedora recently and upgraded to it from redhat 9 on one box and on anouther i did a clean install. From what i have noticed so far it would seem they have a lot of bugs to work out. It doesnt seem to be all that stable compared to the earlier redhat distros.

First of on the box i upgraded it managed to mess up some of the config files a broke mysql a the network configuration pannel in gnome. Who knows what else broke.

In gnome if you go to log out or shutdown on eather box it takes for ever to exit gnome. Also on both boxes most of the standard linux comands and the shell no longer work because it seems to have lost the link to /sbin/ in the user profiles, fixable but some n00bies wouldnt no how to fix it.

Also fedora is suposed to be kernel 2.6 ready by downloading the 2.6 rpm and upgrade to it by going through some easy to follow steps. I did that on my clean install box and after that when i booted into the 2.6 kernel usb no longer works.

Anyways I would say that after all this I would not recremend Fedora for the newer or less skilled people in linux. I though i would make this post just so everyone here can add their findings and comments on Fedora as well

Conversely, I have upgraded three RedHat 9 systems (servers) and done a fresh installation on my notebook, and Fedora has worked flawlessly. I have not lost functionality nor introduced those issues that you mention.

Like Just Mike,

I have two systems running I upgraded to from Redhat 9.0 to Fedora Core 1 flawlessly. No problems with paths and such. I don't use Gnome regularly,
but when I do it exits just as quickly as it ever did.

I was unaware that Fedora Core 1 is kernel 2.6 ready. I know there are people that have made RPMs for it and have gotten to work. But I wouldnt'
call that 2.6 ready. Fedora Core 2 will be 2.6. I believe that if Core 1 was truely 2.6 ready they would release a 2.6 kernel for it, instead of continuing
to patch backwards fixes into the 2.4 kernel they have running.

About the USB problem,

This is a note from a guide to install 2.6 on Fedora.

One issue that you might encounter is that the USB Human Interface module has changed in 2.6, it is called uhci-hcd instead of usb-uhci, so you may need to modify your /etc/modprobe.conf

alias usb-controller uhci-hcd

or add the hardcoded entry in your /etc/rc.sysinit for modprobing uhci-hcd (thanks to Frank Merenda for this).

Not sure if you have fixed that, but if you haven't there could be the problem.

Yeah, I don't think anywhere it's said that FC1 is 2.6 ready... Where did you get the RPMs from? Did you follow any migration instructions? Simply installing a 2.6 kernel in FC1 won't work.

Going to get to work on my test system with the clean install and the newer kernel in a bit Wish me luck

No luck still geting the same result even after trying out multiple kernel packages both from the one sugested on fedoranews and the development one at the fedora project. Have done everything except this part wich seems a bit vage to me as it doesnt realy tell you what to do.

Add the hardcoded entry in your /etc/rc.sysinit for modprobing uhci-hcd.

Im not sure if you suposed to add alias usb-controller uhci-hcd to that file as well or if your suposed to add modprobe uhci-hcd to the end of the file or what :/
So mayby thats causing my problems or the new 2.6 doesnt correctly suport my motherboard chipset Sis 735.
