For the Repubs, Trump's disastrous tenure is much like the passing of a loved one who murdered somebody. First, ya got the shock and dismay phase. Then the denial, the feeling of loss, then the guilt that something more could have been done to prevent the crime and to keep the reaper at bay, then the feelings of sadness and reflection.
And all the while being convinced that this person couldn't have done what he did, that he was a good and honest man, that they could never be wrong about him, even after the deceased was on a rampage of deceit and criminal intent. Defend to the very end because "he was one of us". Apparently, no lessons learned from the Nixon era.
Being defensive has its merits, but you gotta know when to let go, admit an error in judgement was made and make the correct adjustments to prevent the enabling of another anti-social miscreant gone wild. Especially so when a guy like Trump comes along whose primary goal is to make the whole world see thing his way.
Alas history repeats itself to no end.
