<< WASHINGTON ? The Bush administration inflamed the abortion debate yesterday by proposing to expand the definition of a child to include a fetus so that low-income pregnant women could receive taxpayer-funded health care. >>

interesting implications....

btw guys, it'd be nice if we could NOT debate abortion, but rather whether this will challenge it or not. abortion is legal, there have been plenty of other debates about it.

<< "It doesn't have any legal bearing on the state of abortion law," said Douglas Johnson, legislative director for the National Right to Life Committee. In a statement, he added the proposal was one to which "only the most extreme pro-abortion ideologues will object." >>

Riiiiighhht. Slowly, the religious right is trying to force it's will on the rest of humanity. This is exactly why I never liked Bush from the beginning.

Oh, I can't stand NOW. They are so full of it. They can't see beyond what they consider their right to extinguish a life. They have no shame. What about the positive effect of this? Lower-income families will have health care for their children. But the Bush-haters can drum up any kind of argument in spite of the facts.

"This is a way with doing away with the paperwork that's necessary for waivers," Gardett said.

Further, he said, the proposed regulation would allow states that opt to use the new definition of a child to tap into $3.2 billion of unused federal money available for children's health care.

Bush cares a lot, but people like NOW don't give him credit.

do you really think that if the definition is expanded, it won't be used at some point to restrict abortions? i dunno, call me paranoid, but i think there's a fairly good chance of that happening.

I don't like NOW much either, but don't try to force your belief of when life begins on me.

Here's the part I was thinking when I started to read the article.

<< Abortion-rights activists say the Bush administration could provide prenatal care for low-income women without changing the definition of a child. The president could follow the lead of former President Bill Clinton and grant states waivers to the children's program to permit coverage of pregnant women, Gandy said. >>

OH GOOD LORD. So all of a sudden calling a FETUS a CHILD *gasp!* is "forcing" some sort of will on humanity? What about the humanity of the CHILD for goodness sake!? Obviously people like you don't respect life, especially the life of an innocent baby.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, what are you scared of?

Obviously...

Prove to me that cluster of cells is a thinking, feeling, breathing human and I'll agree with you. You can't. You're belief of cells=human life potential=baby is not shared by everyone else. It is largely a religious based ideology that should not be force on the rest of humanity.

Some of these people would feel differently about imposing the shackles of their religion on others if they lived in a muslim or hindu country. Here in the United States, we try to not let one religion rule all others.

The idea that you think I have no respect for human life because of my position on this is just sickening. I can't have a different idea about life without being a degenerate. That's a great attitude.

Adoption is the moral choice.

And yes in some cases, I can change my mind. Like incest and rape.

OK, there is a such thing as ADOPTION. And there are parents out there who want kids and are willing to adopt them.

Ya know what? I'm a woman. And f*** our "decision" on whether we're capable of caring for the child. It's not our "decision" to take someone's life. How heartless could you be???

But for the record, I'm just thankful for the healthcare this would provide to women who WANT to have their children. If it goes to further pro-life causes, then fine. But I'd be happy if they were just given prenatal care and that was the end of it.

did you read the article?

It's only speculation that this bill would challenge R v. Wade.

Liberal jerks!

Don't know a good thing when you see it.

You are so afraid of the "slippery slope" that you would rather deny prenatal care to those in need.

Friggin' idiots.

great, you can put your kids up for adoption if you like. i think however, that there are a lot of other women, who would rather get an abortion. it's not your decision.

Ya know what? I'm a woman. And f*** our "decision" on whether we're capable of caring for the child.

hey you want to hear something crazy? you don't speak for all females! *gasp* :Q

It's not our "decision" to take someone's life. How heartless could you be???

i have more heart than you can ever imagine.

yea, but you and i both know that this probably has further implications... i mean how can it not... it would require a tremendous amount of restraint on behalf of pro-lifers, restratint that i'm not sure they have.

Adoption is the moral choice.

so let me get this straight, we should let *your* morals define everybody else's law?

It's only speculation that this bill would challenge R v. Wade.

well, it's my opinion that you're being naive if you don't think it will.

i just killed about several million children last night. aaah! so sue me! hee hee!

i think it's funny that people who are "pro-life" are usually also "pro death" penalty.
they figure they can dictate when a life should begin and when a life should end, and they're always spouting
off about the "sanctity of human life". my ass.

I had a youth minister that was OK with abortion. His feeling on the matter was that he had faith that God would not impart a soul to a fetus that was to be aborted. I wish other die hard religious folks had the same amount of faith.
