So decided to update my aging desktop. Plan is to use it mostly for software development, no games. I haven't built one for a while, and am a little out of date on my peripherals - so feedback welcome.

I'll be buying parts in US, with a budge of around $1100 - $1300 for everything, including monitor (but am flexible on the budget if there's a good reason to go over). Will be running Ubuntu on the desktop, preferring 2k resolution. No plan to overclock.

Updated based on some ideas in this thread: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/ccBYFT

Anything out of place (overkill/underkill)? Things I should be considering?

"S" processors are "Slow", or for "Small form factor" cases. You need neither.

Oddly, you have picked a mobo that could fit in a small form factor case. Better to get a mobo with 4 RAM slots and get a discrete, external, possibly USB-powered WiFi, with external antenna.

Now that I'm done criticizing your current choices, could you please answer [thread=80121]these questions[/thread]? Such as your location and budget?

Thanks Ken - didn't know those facts, I updated the original post based on your suggestions

That looks delicious, if I were a monster that ate computers, I would feast gloriously upon it. I went with 4690k and a cheap mobo to replace an aging phenom 2 (have an intel 2400 i5 in another machine as well) ....

Motherboard: plain vanilla ASRock - would that work with Skylake?
No, you need a 100-series mobo for Skylake.

I just looked up the PSU that comes with that case, and...oh, Deer! But I'm not a "case person", so I don't know if you want to stick with that case and get a replacement PSU, or look for a different case.

Also, did you know the Skylake K's don't come with CPU coolers? Here's some possible parts:

Non-overclocking motherboards and processors - the processors including CPU coolers - should be available by the end of this month, if you want to wait.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, updated OP based on some of it. Major difference - decided against going with skylake - not convinced extra $60 would buy that much performance.

Main uncertainties I have left are motherboard: there is big price variability, and I'm not sure if it's worth going for higher end ones. And monitor - decided to settle on a cheaper monitor, my thoughts are that the extra cost is not worth it if one isn't playing games.

Are you a fan of 16x9 monitors for software development work? I do spreadsheets and word documents, and I strongly prefer 16x10.
